15 Celebrities You Didn’t Know Have Freckles

Here’s one good reason to be grateful for no-makeup selfies: Without them, we might still be under the illusion that nobody in Hollywood has freckles. When actresses and models are all foundationed up for events and photo shoots, we rarely get to see their skin in even a semi-natural state. But through social media, they’ve let us peek behind the makeup veil (and occasionally the filters too) and see what’s really going down. And that includes—gasp!—plenty of freckles of all shapes and sizes. You know, just like normal people acquire over the course of normal life/sun exposure.

Kicking it off is Demi Lovato. One of the many reasons we love following her is because she’s always made a point of celebrating her bare skin—freckles included.

The fashion/editorial world has also been feeling the freckles lately, letting them shine through on the runway and photoshoots (even darkening them sometimes). Example:Emma Watson’s oft-overlooked freckles came into sharp focus on the winter cover of Porter magazine.

Not everyone’s feeling the freckle fetishism, though. Olivia Munn has them all over her face and once ‘grammed about how (and why) she’s been playing them down. “I love my freckles,” she wrote. “But over the past couple of years I’ve seen more come up and merge with other freckles to make large dark spots. Dark spots prevent your skin from reflecting light and gives you a dull complexion. So for the past year I’ve been diligently using Proactiv Mark Fading Pads. I wipe my face with one every night and now my face has a more even tone and the large spots aren’t as noticeable.”

But recently, it seems, she’s been into showing them off again:

Megan Fox, surprisingly, also has a few freckles—although she seems to have taken to covering them with makeup. But back in the archives, there’s proof.

How interesting that the freckle script has flipped, from women feeling pressured to cover them up to women feeling pressured to explain why they’re playing them down. As much as we’ve been enjoying all the freckle love out there, whether or not to cover them up is totally a question of taste and style, no different from how much cleavage you bare or whether you straighten curly hair. But the fact that letting frecks flourish concealer-free is now a popular option? That’s a universally beautiful thing.
