Attempting to rock a bold lip on date night is a tricky undertaking for obvious reasons—there’s the smudge on the champagne flute glass, the lip stain on the dinner napkin (I always feel guilty about this one), and, of course, that whole kissing thing. With these sentiments in mind, if you’re the type who enjoys a good pop of lip color, fear not. We kiss-tested tons of our favorite lipsticks in a variety of bright smooch-friendly shades and narrowed them down to the ones that Will. Not. Budge. Our line up of old and new classics, below.
New Classic: NYX Full Throttle Waterproof Lipstick in Firestorm ($7, ulta.com)
This fire-engine red glides on easily and dries faster than any cream-to-matte lipstick I’ve tried. It’s almost like a magic trick. I kissed my hand a bunch of times to make sure this didn’t budge, and after 10 awkward public hand kisses, I was convinced.
New Classic: MAC Retro Matte Lip Color in Tailored to Tease ($20, maccosmetics.com)
This lip color feels light upon application (think coconut oil, texture-wise) but dries into a completely matte finish in less than 10 seconds. Plus, the doe foot is pointy, which allows for more definition—meaning it’s easy to fake fuller lips.
Classic: Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Always Red ($14, sephora.com)
The name of this cream lip stain is completely accurate, as your lips will be eternally red after a quick swipe with the easy-to-use doe-foot wand. This feels creamy upon application but dries matte fast—perfect if you’re spending all day with a date and need to glam up quickly before dinner. Bonus: It’s super easy to remove with a cleansing towelette (I’ve been digging Cetaphil’s because they’re really gentle and don’t reek of fragrance).
New Classic: Colour POP Ultra Matte in Kae ($6, colourpop.com)
In the spirit of International Kissing Day, this color genuinely looks like milk chocolate on your lips (in a pretty way). And unlike some of the other cream-to-matte lipsticks, which leave a slightly chalky after-feel, Colour POP’s made my lips feel totally au naturel, even if they looked like a Hershey’s bar.
Classic: Rimmel Provocalips 16 Hour Kiss Proof Lip Color in Play With Fire ($7, ulta.com)
Sixteen hours is a ridiculously long time to kiss another human being, but I’m pretty sure it can be done smudge-free with this lip-color-plus-lip-sealant (the second bit locks in the color and keeps it there). And if you like Swedish Fish and you want your lipstick to also taste like Swedish Fish, then this lipstick is for you. Yum.
Classic: Chanel Rouge Double Intensite Ultra Wear Lip Color in Shocking Pink ($37, macys.com)
This creamy double-sided lipstick delivers some serious durability with the added perk of megawatt shine. After swiping the color on your lips and following up with the gloss, give it a minute to set. Then smooch your hand and behold the magic—not even the gloss will transfer on to it.
