Beyonce’s Ball-of-Hair Bun: Yeah, We Need to Talk About It

Beyonce brought a little friend with her to Art Basel in Miami yesterday. No, not Blue Ivy. A ball of hair.

I don’t believe we’ve seen a top knot quite this perfectly round and high since the Ashanti one-eared-Minnie-Mouse hairstyle incident of 2011. It really does look like Beyonce is balancing a ball on her head, and that if she makes one quick move, or even just one dramatic Sasha Fierce facial expression, her bun will roll off onto the floor. I suppose it’s a perfect hairstyle for Art Basel, since it’s basically its own little sculpture. (And probably one of the most ogled/photographed ones at the fair, judging by the unbridled enthusiasm of those ladies on the right.) Still, while Beyonce might be making the hair-ball look work–might–I’m not convinced ordinary women can wear this version of the top knot without looking stoopid. Ours need to be wider, flatter and just more anchored-looking. Maybe a bit further back on the head, too. Am I right?
