Butt-Length Hair Is the AMAs Red Carpet Trend No One Saw Coming

Red carpet trends are about as predictable as they come: They’re glamorous, (usually) made-up, and often remind us just how sub-par our cat eye skills are. (Just being honest here.) But every now and then, like on tonight’s 2016 American Music Awards red carpet, there’s a trend that veers away from the expected smoky eyes, loose waves, and bold lipstick that makes our beauty-loving hearts start thumping.

Last year, it was Gigi Hadid’s major bob reveal, which surely landed on many a Pinterest board and stylist’s chair (even if it was only wig), and tonight, well, it’s actually the exact opposite that got us excited for something new. After years of the messy, choppy lob being the it haircut, the AMAs red carpet was all about hair with extra, extra long length.

Each look was styled in a few various micro-trends we’ve seen emerging lately—in high and coiled I-Dream-of-Jeannie ponies, in ’70s stick-straight and parted down the center styles, in slick-in-the-front, textured-in-the-back ponytails—but all had a common denominator. They went down to there. Like, there there. In other words: butt-length hair* is having a moment.

But enough talking about it. On to the photos from the AMAs red carpet!

True to her usual ponytail form, Ariana Grande went the route that lent itself most to some serious side-to-side hair whippage.

Taraji P. Henson went from literally having a bob yesterday to this glorious Rapunzel-length pony. A friendly reminder of just how fun wigs and extensions can be.

Nicki Minaj joined Ari on-stage and never were there so many long hair goals in one picture.

There were also a few looks that, while not booty-length, are a handful of hair vitamins and a few extra inches of extensions away from fitting the bill.

Case in point: Julianne Hough. We truly didn’t think we’d see the day when her lob disappeared, and yet here we are.

Karlie Kloss did another take on the Jeannie pony and topped it off with a cute black bow.

And lastly of the lob converts, Chrissy Teigen also showed up with some crazy long length. (We imagine the prep went something along the lines of this.)

So, if tonight’s red carpet is any indication, get ready to grow out your wavy lob and bust out your hair straighter—if following trends is your thing. Otherwise, continue doing you, girl.

*Note: Do NOT try to abbreviate this trend. Butt hair = not quite the same as butt-length hair. You’ve been warned.
