Do or Don’t: The Asymmetrical Haircut Trend
Warning: This post may cause extreme ’80s flashbacks. I mentioned *Jem (who you may know as the leader of Jem and the Holograms) yesterday *and there’s a reason why the old-school cartoon has been on my mind recently. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve spotted a couple of stars sporting intentionally lop-sided hairstyles, which always make me think of the show’s character Clash whose hair snaked down just one shoulder. So before I get into whether the revival of this trend is a good thing, let me first refresh your memory of the cartoon character’s hair:
Funny, right? Now that that’s out of the way, on to the stars I’ve spotted recently sporting similar styles.
Here’s Queen Latifah with a short ‘do I first noticed at the *The Secret Life of Bees *premiere (though I was too obsessed with her lipstick at the time to focus on the hair).
And we also have Gwyneth Paltrow’s funky bob, which I pointed out around the time she first debuted it a few weeks ago.
And we have singer Natasha Bedingfield going for drama with the most unbalanced cut out of these three celebs.
My take: I actually really love the Queen’s style—I think it’s fresh and cool and frames her face well. And I’ve already admitted that I adore Gwyneth’s do. But Natasha’s is just a little too close to Clash’s style for me—it’s almost like a lopsided mullet. I think it’s possible that I’ll like it better when it grows out a bit, but for now, I can’t give it my thumbs up.
__What do you think of asymmetrical hair? Are you a fan? Do you love all three styles? Think any of the looks don’t work? Are you planning your uneven cut as you read this? And, um, am I the only Jem fan who remembers Clash’s hair that vividly? __
