How to Do Your Makeup the Chanel Girl Way
You know a Chanel girl when you see her. Case in point: The woman staring at you in the photo above. She’s Chanel’s global creative makeup and color designer, Lucia Pica, and she happens to be the living, breathing embodiment of the brand’s ethos: “unafraid, unapologetic, and elegant.” All of which could also be said about the new fall products she designed for the French fashion house. The London-based Italian makeup artist took a stateside road trip from Los Angeles to Big Sur—with friends, photographer Max Farago and filmmaker Clara Cullen, in tow—to inspire the Travel Diary Makeup Collection.
To celebrate the new Cali-inspired launch, we caught up with Lucia at a private dinner in Santa Monica, along with a crew of quintessential California (and Chanel!) girls: Yara Shahidi, Rowan Blanchard, Zoe Cassavetes, Jennifer Meyer, and Rodarte’s Laura Mulleavy. Everywhere you looked it was like a master class in makeup. Lucia says all of the women are “playful and daring,” but are also conscious of their natural skin. She encourages women to break the rules in order to achieve a “sophisticated, but not too overly done” look, and she is adamant when it comes to using bold color—but always in a “relaxed, deconstructed, and modern way.”
Grab your little black palette because here Lucia shares her best tips for achieving that signature Chanel glamour.
1. When it comes to eye makeup, it’s all about texture.“Wear a bold intense color on the eye,” says Lucia, who advises using your fingers to apply cream eyeshadow and then add powder on top, so you create “strength with the color and with the texture.” Just leave your brows simple: You want them to complement your eyes, not overpower.
2. Sweep blush downward, not up, for a more modern look.“Don’t do the ‘80s thing, putting blush until the high cheekbone,” she says. Instead, she likes to dab a little bit of color on the apples of the cheeks and blend it down and out. “It looks like a natural flash that way,” she adds.
3. Go easy on base makeup.“I would use a minimal foundation if you have to, if you feel like you need to,” says Lucia, whose secret tip is to mix in a drop of oil to make foundation more translucent. But she really prefers using a creamy concealer only and building up if necessary.
