Kat Von D Gave a Huge Sneak Peek at the Palette She’s Been Working on for 7 Years
Some lucky people in the Windy City got a special treat over the weekend. Kat Von D surprised The Makeup Show Chicago attendees with a special pre-release of the Kat Von D Alchemist Palette. If you weren’t at the show, you’ll still be able to get the palette when it officially launches at Sephora next month.
Until then, at least we finally know what will be inside the holographic white triangle. The company posted a peek at the palette’s four shades on their Instagram and Snapchat Stories on Saturday, and, as you might expect from the apt name, the holographic selection does indeed play off the theme of alchemy. As a reminder, and at the risk of sounding like a sixth grade book report, Merriam-Webster defines alchemy as “a power or process that changes or transforms something in a mysterious or impressive way.” Kat Von D calls the shadows in the palette “prismatic transformers.” I’ve never heard of that term before, but I’m guessing it means they are duochromes—or colors that look markedly different depending on which way outside light sources hit them.
Von D has literally been teasing this thing since pretty much August 2015. The tattoo artist-meets-makeup guru posted a picture on Instagram of swatches, saying they are an “eyeshadow formula I’ve been working on for the past 5 years.”

Then, in May of this year, she showed off a sketch of the compact artwork with its large A and filagree design.

A month later, she finally posted a video of the first prototype of the Kat Von D Alchemist Palette. Because she said it wasn’t launching for nearly a year, I almost forgot about it entirely until she posted another picture of the outside of the palette last Friday.

The Kat Von D social-media stories showed swatches of the shades, too, and the names are pretty descriptive. There’s {Green} Emerald, {Blue} Saphyre, {Ultra-Violet} Amethyst, and {Pink} Opal. When each shade is used alone, the finish is sheer and holographic, like a particularly moony highlighter. Imagine these holographic beauties atop cheekbones, brow bones, and in the inner corners of the eye. Just the thought is making my day.
The company also showed what the Alchemist shades look like when brushed over lipstick. They’re kind of like powdered versions of the holographic Sigma Lip Switches, shade-shifting the tones ever-so-slightly.
An exact date for the December launch of the Alchemist Palette hasn’t been announced yet, but we reached out to Kat Von D for more info and will update this post when we hear back.
