Keke Palmer’s Buzz Cut Is Now Lisa Frank Purple

When Keke Palmer shaved off her hair a few weeks ago, we were into it. Very into it; the buzz had been a few months coming, with Palmer’s look fluctuating from long, to pixie, to a shaved side fade. When you can pull any and everything off as well as Palmer, no duh, you wanna try everything you can—and now Palmer’s trying another, by the name of bright, bright—did we mention bright?—purple hair. We’re talking Lisa Frank–folder levels of highlighter color. It’s glorious.

Posted on Instagram yesterday, Palmer told Refinery29 that she actually dyed it purple herself. (We’re also in awe that she reached that level of saturation on her own. Skills.) “As you can see from my track record, I love trying new things. I love finding new versions of myself,” Palmer told the outlet.

The actress’s posted photos feature a Guess T-shirt in the exact same shade, a trick we’re also loving. Which came first, the T-shirt or the hair dye? It’s a modern day chicken-egg conundrum. Regardless, Palmer says she’s “excited to see how I can assist in this change with my wardrobe. For me, style is about self-expression.”

Beyond that, she says the buzz was also a chance to start from scratch—something that can be completely freeing (if mildly terrifying). In Palmer’s case, she says it was the former: “I wanted to start over. My texture has changed quite a bit over the years from all the things I’ve done to it. I really want to be able to let my hair rest and become its own thing. I also really wanted to be bald!”

And while life on set can demand certain looks of actors, à la Jennifer Lawrence’s blunt bangs, Palmer says she’s using her second of freedom to live large and thus purple. “I’m in a place in my life where I realized I don’t have anything stopping me from expressing myself in any facet, and that makes me happy.”
