Let’s Settle This: Is Nude Nail Polish Chic, Or Does It Make You Have Weird Plastic Doll Hands?

I can never decide how I feel about nude nail polish–as in, not clear, but flesh-toned opaque color. Let’s look at these examples and then decide once and for all if this (recurring) nail trend is one we should be following or ignoring.

Here’s Kate Beckinsale out promoting Underworld yesterday …

… and here’s a zoom-in of her nude nail polish.

We also just saw nude nail polish on the Versace runway (click here for more interesting beauty moments from the couture shows).

So here are the pros and cons of nude nail polish, as I see it.

NUDE NAIL POLISH PROS:

  • subtle and matches whatever you wear

  • doesn’t show chips that easily

  • somehow edgier than the usual Ballet Slippers-ish neutrals

NUDE NAIL POLISH CONS:

  • why bother painting your nails a color this subtle?

  • you really need to match your skin tone, because a color that’s slightly off will look just creepy and not-flattering

  • viewed up close, has a creepy tendency to make you appear to have plastic doll hands (because actual non-doll “nude” nails have a gradation in color–pink at the bottom, white at the top)

Yes, that’s a Monchhichi doll–whatever, I couldn’t find a good Barbie-hand closeup in time to post this. He’ll have to do.

I just don’t know. So I’m going to toss this one out to you, our readers, so we can establish an official Girls in the Beauty Department blog verdict regarding nude nail polish.

What are your feelings about nude nail polish? Do you ever wear it?
