Mullets: Now Illegal In Iran; Will Snag You a Discount at the Zoo in the States
How’s this for a contrast: Apparently in Iran, the mullet is now illegal. But over here in the USA, the “business in the front, party in the back” hairstyle gets you a discount at a zoo.
The haircut is celebrated in American movies. Evidence: Joe Dirt.
The Telegraph reported yesterday that the Iranian government has come out with guidelines for acceptable and unaccepted hairstyles for men. Out: Mullets and ponytails. In: Elvis coifs and side parts. And, yes, if people are caught out with one of the banned hairstyles, they’ll be arrested.
But coincidentally, on Monday the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium offered $5 discounts off admission to visitors sporting mullets, joking that the mullet is an endangered species that is about to go extinct.
Now, of course, it’s kind of funny how much more mullet-friendly this makes our country seem than Iran, but the more serious issue here is self-expression. It’s the juxtaposition of these two stories highlights the fact that we don’t have to worry about the government regulating hairstyles or clothing. We have the right to look as stupid as we want to. And that’s a pretty beautiful thing (even if the mullet itself isn’t).
What do you think, gang, is it crazy that mullets are all over the news all of a sudden? Can you imagine the government regulating our hairstyles? Are you hoping the mullet actually does go extinct? Did these two stories make you strangely appreciate the haircut more? Discuss.
