The Secret to Jenna Dewan’s Hair Is This $10 Sea-Salt Spray

Ask any hairstylist which celebrity their clients bring in photos of most often, and Jenna Dewan will inevitably be one of the responses. Whether she’s in a shoulder-grazing lob, a blunt bob, or extensions, Dewan’s signature messy waves never miss a beat. That’s why when her fans requested a hair tutorial, Dewan obliged, sharing the products she uses every day for her go-to look or, as she calls it, a “natural wind-swept beachy vibe.”

In the video on her YouTube channel, Dewan casually name-drops friends and celebrity stylists Kristin Ess and Jen Atkin, whom she’s clearly learned a few things from. Her everyday hair includes a mix of products from Ess’s and Atkin’s lines, with the caveat being that Dewan’s main priority is a speedy hairstyle. “I always try to keep it super simple and ready-to-go,” she explains in the video. “I don’t spend a lot of time on my hair, so I have to have a haircut and products that I can literally put in my hair, scrunch, use, and go!”

Don’t get it twisted though. Despite the fact that many of the products she uses are behind the names of pro stylists, her entire routine is surprisingly affordable. You can pick up Ess’s line, in fact, at Target.

The first thing she starts with right after getting out of the shower is a leave-in conditioner. “I literally spray the Kristin Ess Leave-In Conditioner ($10) all over my hair generally from mid to the bottom of my hair and it gives it just a really nice soft [feeling],” Dewan says. “It takes away the frizz. [Kristin] calls it her number one and I call it my number one too.”

Next comes Atkin’s Ouai Wave Spray ($26)—a favorite among editors because, as Dewan mentions, it gives your hair hold and texture without it getting too crunchy. “When my hair is still damp I put it in and it gives it this real good texture,” she says. “It starts bringing out your natural wave.” But on days she wants it messier, she turns to Kristin Ess Sea Salt Air-Dry Spray ($10). “It’s like as if you went to the beach,” she says.

But as anyone who uses a lot of texturizing products knows, they can leave your hair a little matte or dry. Which is why Dewan says she rakes a drop of Kristin Ess Weightless Shine Working Serum ($14) through her hair after she adds texture. “We use this every single day on World of Dance because my hair gets a little dry from all the styling and all the products,” she says. “It takes all the frizz away and makes it nice and smooth and shiny.”

For her normal day-to-day, that’s where her process ends—from there, it’s all air-drying. “Since I’m a mom, there’s actually no real time to do my hair, so what I do is put in all these products and let it dry a bit, so it sets the natural wave to my hair,” she says while scrunching her hair up. But when she wants her waves to look “more finished,” she’ll also rotate in Ouai’s Texturizing Hair Spray ($26), Oribe’s Surfcomber Tousled Texture Mousse ($39), and Batiste’s Dry Shampoo ($6). “This for some reason is just magic,” she says of the latter.
