10 Amazing Secrets About HGTV’s Property Brothers’ Jonathan and Drew Scott
Picture this: I’m at LP Field during the CMA Country Music Festival in Nashville. Blake Shelton is on stage playing to a sold out crowd of screaming fans. I’m inside, away from the concert, trying to grab a quiet moment to chat with HGTV’s hot identical twins Drew and Jonathan Scott, better known as the Property Brothers. But I can barely get in a word edgewise because their fans can’t believe their luck and are coming by in droves to say hi.
If you haven’t been watching Property Brothers, the concept of the show is pretty genius. They help first-time home buyers find, buy, and transform extreme fixer-uppers into their ultimate dream homes. Drew’s the real estate agent, while Jonathan is the contractor. And the cool part is that they use state-of-the-art CGI to show their clients their vision for the final product.
But real estate is just one of the many, many things that makes these Canadian born-and-raised boys stand out. They’re actors, entrepreneurs (their first successful business venture started when they were SEVEN years old), and even romantics at heart. Trust me, it’s worth getting to know the secrets of the hottest brothers on HGTV!
1. There’s One Way You CAN’T Tell Them Apart.
Jonathan and Drew have very similar voices—so similar that even their mom has a hard time recognizing them over the phone—but she does have one method. “She said I use bigger words,” Jonathan explains. “I’ve been seeking therapy ever since,” Drew deadpans. “If you want something special, in Mexico and in Spain we’re dubbed in Spanish and we have the sexiest Spanish voices, let me tell you!” Jonathan laughs. The funny thing is, they use the same guy to do both voices!
2. The Twin Thing Was a Surprise.
“They didn’t do an ultrasound and the heartbeats were in sync. The doctor said it was one big baby,” Drew says. “Jonathan came out with a flat head, and I guess I was sitting on his head in the womb and gave him a nice ass print. The nurse said, ‘I think there’s another one!’ My mother said, ‘Oh sh-t,’ and then I came.”
Me in a Property Brothers sandwich! They are almost a foot taller than me!
3. They’re Actors.
Both Jonathan and Drew starred on the Canadian series Breaker High. Also, Drew had a role on Smallville, and Jonathan was on The X-Files. Not wanting to become “starving actors,” they went into real estate: “During university we did our very first property, ended up flipping it—before flipping was a trend or cool. We did ended up making about a $50,000 profit. We thought this was something, while still in college. We went back to school for construction and design, and our company exploded and we were approached to do Property Brothers…”
This is Drew.
4. And Directors.
“We have our production company,” says Drew. “[Our first feature film is] called Wing Man, but we’re still in that finance stage. It’s coming together, and it’s gonna be amazing. It’s a romantic comedy, and we’ll get some name actors. I actually have some names that I want—Emma Stone, James McAvoy—but we’ll see if that works out.”
5. Oh, and Comedians Too.
The brothers started in an improv sketch group and do sketch comedy and stand up. They show off their comedic side in webisodes and bloopers—like this one—on HGTV.com.
6. Jonathan Is an Illusionist.
“The 3D designs we use on the show are what I see in my head when we walk into the space,” he explains. “Ever since I was a kid and watched magicians on stage, like David Copperfield or Siegfried and Roy, I instantly knew how they did everything. In my head, it just all worked. I used to design my own illusions, designed them, and did all the woodworking myself. For me, it’s like telling a story. I think that’s why we do well with Property Brothers. It’s our charisma with each other and with the audience. We’ve always been great storytellers.” FYI—If you go to a magic show in Las Vegas, there’s a good chance that the magician is performing an illusion that Jonathan created!
7. They Really Are Best Friends.
“Drew never argues with me because I carry very heavy power tools all the time,” Jonathan laughs. “I just tell Jonathan that he’s always right,” Drew says. “Jonathan and I are outspoken. If there’s something that’s bothering us we just say it, deal with it, and move on.” Their older brother, JD, works with them too and the same rules apply. “We call it a no B.S. Policy. Anything we’re thinking, whether it’s negative or positive, we just get it out so it’s out,” Jonathan explains. “I don’t mind receiving bad news or having someone with a different opinion as long as they give it to me.”
This is Jonathan.
8. Their First Renovation Project Was Their Childhood Bedroom.
“Growing up, we were in a strict household, so we weren’t allowed to have posters of our crushes and stuff on the wall—mine was Cristina Applegate,” Jonathan explains. “But we would move things around and move the furniture. My mom would just be in there and go away for like 20 minutes and come back and there would be a completely different look in the room,” Drew says. “Jonathan and I would still be sitting there playing with the same toys and pretend like nothing happened. We loved it.”
9. They Became Entrepreneurs at the Age of Seven.
“We turned seven and our dad said we had to get a job,” the brothers explain. “We were looking at the want ads, but our very first job was a company we started called JAM Enterprises [it was for Jon, Andrew, Mom] and we made those hangers that weave nylon around it and there’s a little rose on it. We sold thousands of them and ended up hooking up with a woman who owned a bunch of American paraphernalia stores in Japan. She bought them by the crates!”
10. Ladies, They’re Single!
“Our next renovation project is renovating Jonathan’s dating life,” Drew laughs. But if you want to get to know the brother’s romantic sides a bit better and decide which one is right for you—check this out:
P.S. The surprises with these guys never stop. They also mentioned in passing that they play the bagpipes (they have a Scottish heritage) and once tried to form a boy band!
