An Easy-Peasy DIY Halloween Costume Idea: Sesame Street Gets Political!
This year, occupy is out and the election is in, but you can still take a few hints from the DIY Sesame Street costume my friends and I put together last year!
Let’s start with the final product. Elmo likes!
OK, we’re ready to begin. First rule of DIY: M is for Mess. Don’t be afraid to make one.
Tip: You can find furry fabric at most fabric/craft stores.
H is for Hungry. Order pizza before your hands are covered in paint, glue, and feathers.
Tip: A spaghetti strainer will double as a great Super Grover hat.
See?
P is for Props: Add to the drama by carrying signs. Use a box cutter to cut shapes into foam core, then paint and glue to a wooden stick.
Elmo’s face, like the Sesame Street sign, was cut from foam core. Elmo then added cut layers of colored felt, and styrofoam balls for the eyes. Elmo done!
Tip: if making a street sign, use silver paint for the back of the sign. Or use metal, but that’s heavier.
Speaking of metal, a real garbage can lid hot-glued to a headband will make a fabulous hat.
Tip: Don’t be afraid to pose with real props…
…Or the competition.
C is for Costume Competition. In a sea of black swans, Big Bird’s yellow feather boa sewn onto a mini was a big hit.
We expect that this Halloween, Big Bird will be… big, so if you want to stand out, be creative! Unless you have serious cash for these, orange duct tape over pink leg warmers or tights will do.
C is also for Cookies.
The key to this cookie dress was the romper hot-glued underneath, which allowed Cookie to cut around the fabric in the shape of the dress. Like Elmo’s face, these cookies were made of felt…
These cookies were not.
F is for Fun. Don’t forget to have it.
O is for Ouch. At the end of the night, Elmo says it’s OK to take those shoes off.
Tip: Elmo shops for shoes at Target.
This photo diary was brought to you by the letter C, because Cookie documents everything.
What are you going to be for Halloween?
