Anne Hathaway Is Gaining Weight for a Role, and She Has a Message for Fat Shamers

Anne Hathaway has it figured out: Just shut down the trolls before they even come out. “I am gaining weight for a movie role and it is going well. To all the people who are going to fat shame me in the upcoming months, it’s not me, it’s you. Peace xx,” Hathaway wrote on Instagram on Thursday, alongside a time-lapse video of herself during an intense workout. “PS: I wanted to set this to Queen’s ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ but copyright said. Continued peace xx,” she added.

The post garnered hundreds of replies, most of which were in support of Hathaway. “Go for it. This is dedication to your craft. Power to you,” one commenter wrote. “You’re a beautiful person inside and out no matter what size you are,” another added.

To be clear, Hathaway owed no explanation for her weight gain—even if it was for a new role—but she likely did so because body shaming is totally out of control, as are Hathaway’s personal army of haters. Just a few weeks ago, Hathaway posted another Instagram message in honor of her 2013 Oscars win for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Les Misérables. In that post, she also called out the “corny haters” for getting all up in her Oscar-winning business.

“I had to change my dress last minute and so it looked like my nipples were hard, I had full-blown laryngitis and had to sing, and a bunch of corny haters were getting lots of attention from the media for being haters but you know what? It was still the best,” she wrote.”To all the nominees, I hope you have a BLAST tonight doing all that #bestlife #oscars stuff. Peace xx.”

And more recently Hathaway explained to Jezebel that while she really doesn’t care what the world thinks about her, she’s actually grateful to the rude people everywhere who somehow think they have a say in how this woman acts, conducts her life, what she weighs and more.

“It’s not that I’ve gotten a rhino skin to it, but I sort of see all of that for what it is…. How the world feels about me has nothing to do with me. How other people treat me has nothing to do with me,” she said. “But if anything that anybody said resonated with me as something I’d like to work on for myself, I took it in like that. And to that extent, I feel like I got to shortcut a lot of my growth. To that extent, even though I wouldn’t have chosen to go through it, I still found a way to be grateful to it.”
