Demi Lovato Showed Off Her ‘Extra Fat’ on Instagram to Make an Important Point
Demi Lovato’s been a body positivity advocate for years now. The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer has repeatedly opened up about her own eating disorder, which has created a safe space for her legion of fans to share their stories. She continued this transparency on Thursday night (April 5) by posting several positive stories on Instagram that highlighted her cellulite and stretch marks.
First: In a Boomerang post on her Instagram Story, Lovato pinched some skin on her stomach and wrote, “Stretch marks and extra fat..and yet I still love myself.” She then shared another Boomerang shot through a mirror in her closet, where she swiveled her hips while wearing a T-shirt and shorts. “Cellulite and yet I still love myself,” she wrote, drawing an arrow from the caption to her legs.
Fans, however, quickly pointed out that they could see little to no cellulite on Lovato’s legs—and she explained the why with candor. “The Boomerang smoothed out my legs,” she wrote. “The point is, I have cellulite just like the other 93% of women do. What you see on Instagram isn’t always what it seems to be. Let’s embrace our real selves. #iloveme.”
She ended her stream of posts with a final, smiling mirror selfie. “No thigh gap for me and yet I still love myself,” she wrote in the caption. Of course, there’s nothing right or wrong about having a thigh gap—some people’s bodies are simply built with wide-set hip bones—but the expectation that people’s bodies should look a certain type of way is problematic. Thankfully, there’s been a movement both on social media and beyond to embrace your thighs—however they look.

Lovato’s Instagram posts are coming off the heels of her revealing on Twitter that she’s done with dieting. “No longer depriving myself of treats (in moderation), and I’m not gonna lie, I put on a couple lbs since I’ve given up dieting BUT I’ve given up the chronic stress of what I eat because I don’t want to set that example for my fans. No more food shaming myself,” she said.
