Here’s Molly Ringwald’s Awesome Cover of The Breakfast Club Theme “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”
I was already feeling nostalgic today thanks to Megan’s 2003-goodies post. And now Molly Ringwald had to go and sing a cover of the theme song from her 1985 hit The Breakfast Club, the Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” Amazing. That’s it; somebody cue up the time machine ’cause I’m like, so over 2013.
But before you listen, be warned: This is a jazzy spin because it’s from her, you guessed it, new jazz album, Except Sometimes. (It’s not that weird that Molly made a jazz album—she’s been performing with her dad’s jazz band since she was 3, according to HuffPost).
Here’s her take:
And in case you want to relive the original, here’s that:
There’s actually a touching story behind her decision to record the song:
“I really think the reason why we did it was because when we recorded the album, it really wasn’t that long after John Hughes had passed away and he was on my mind a lot. I thought it would be interesting to just hear that song in such a different way. The song was meaningful to me. I remember the first time I heard it, when I first heard the demo when they brought it when we were filming in Chicago and when Simple Minds agreed to record it. It was really exciting. So that’s pretty much why I did that. It was the only song on the album really that’s modern at all.”
