Is Taylor Swift’s Sexiest New Song Actually About Ed Sheeran?
Another Taylor Swift album release, another round of fan rumors and speculations. And this morning, Swifties are puzzling over the new track “Dress,” which some think might be about Swift’s BFF (and a collaborator on another song from Reputation) Ed Sheeran.
It’s not too much of a stretch that Swift would get inspiration from a friend and fellow collaborator, but this particular song doesn’t seem like it’s about a platonic relationship at all—the new track actually focuses on a dress someone bought just so their love interest can take it off. That is not a “just friends” activity.
So why are fans making a connection with the song and the British singer, as opposed to, say, the singer’s current boyfriend, Joe Alwyn? The biggest clue is a lyric that reads, “Our secret moments in a crowded room / They got no idea about me and you / There is an indentation in the shape of you / Made your mark on me, a golden tattoo,”
There’s speculation that the line “shape of you” could be a nod to the Sheeran song of the same name, while the “golden tattoo” could be a connection to Sheeran’s general affection for ink.

And if you’re sure nothing could possibly happen romantically between these two because of their history as friends, consider this line, “Everyone thinks that they know us / But they know nothing.” Maybe there’s been secret sexual tension between the two musicians all along, and the fans and press just couldn’t see the signs? It’s an interesting theory, but we’re still placing our bets on this song being about Alwyn.
While fans do a deep dive into Swift’s new songs and lyrics to crack the ever-elusive Taylor Swift code, one old Reputation mystery has officially been solved. According to the credits on “Gorgeous,” the baby who provided her cooing voice for the song is Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’s daughter James. Let’s hope Auntie Taylor got her a really nice toy (or stylish outfit) for her artistic contribution.
