James Bond Has Nothing on Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon in ‘The Spy Who Dumped Me’ Trailer

Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon are comedic geniuses in their own rights. Their recent projects in particular have broken new ground for women in comedy, like Kunis’ Bad Moms franchise and McKinnon’s involvement in the all-female Ghostbusters reboot. Now, these powerhouses are joining forces for a new film, The Spy Who Dumped Me, which flips the spy-action genre on its head.

The two actresses debuted the film’s first trailer on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday (March 21), and it’s clear within the first five minutes we’re in for something chaotic, hilarious, and unexpected. The trailer opens with the phrase, “In 2018, women are killing it,” and sets up the premise of the movie: Shortly after Audrey (Kunis) and her boyfriend, played by Justin Theroux, break up, she learns he’s actually a member of the CIA with enemies on his tail—and now those bad guys are after Audrey, too. So she grabs her funniest friend Morgan (McKinnon) and sets off on a whirlwind chase through Europe, à la Jason Bourne or James Bond.

Audrey and Morgan’s tactics are decidedly different from Bond, though. Their attempt to commandeer a car is foiled when they realize it’s a stick shift and can’t figure out how to switch gears. At one point in the trailer, Morgan has to swallow a flash drive whole. And later, the women immediately start spilling hilarious secrets about each other to get out of being tortured—you know, typical best-friend stuff.

Kunis and McKinnon told DeGeneres there was “instant love” between them from the very first day of production. “Kate is incredibly intelligent,” Kunis gushed about her costar. “You are one of the smartest people. You’re so well-rounded, you can talk about anything. You’re not judgmental. You’re just a fun person to be around and have a conversation with.” The feeling is mutual. “I have to say—and not to, like, steal what you said about me—but I also was like, ‘Oh my god, she’s so smart!'” McKinnon said of Kunis. “I thought, ‘I’m in a masterclass with actress Mila Kunis, how lucky am I?!'”

The Spy Who Dumped Me arrives in theaters August 3.
