Keira Knightley Returns as Elizabeth Swann in This *Pirates 5* International Trailer
If you stopped caring about Pirates of the Caribbean after Keira Knightley left in 2007, you’re not alone. (Orlando Bloom leaving that same year was a devastating blow too.) There’s only so much of drunk Jack Sparrow fumbling around we can take before we start questioning our life choices. That’s why the fifth (yes, fifth) film in the franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales, is so exciting. All of the key players are returning: Johnny Depp (natch), Bloom, and—drum roll please—Knightley.
Yes, Elizabeth Swann is back after a 10-year hiatus. (If you remember, she and Bloom’s character, Will, sailed off into the sunset at the end of At World’s End.) Pirates fans can catch an early glimpse of her in an international trailer for Dead Men Tell No Tales. The appearance is brief but already iconic: Clad in a rose-color dress, she stares wistfully at something—Will? buried treasure? the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disney World?—as her hair blows in the wind. Who knows? Who cares! This five-second moment might be more exciting than literally all four Pirates movies combined.
Why? Because the women are the best characters in this clunky franchise. Penélope Cruz single-handedly made On Stranger Tides watchable; Zoë Saldana’s small cameo is the best part of Curse of the Black Pearl; and, like we said, the series sank when Keira Knightley—the OG Pirates queen—exited. Her return (no matter how short) is enough to get our behinds to the theater. Here’s hoping it’s literally just two hours and 33 minutes of Elizabeth putting Jack in his place.
