Sarah Jessica Parker Just Addressed Her Feud With Kim Cattrall
Kim Cattrall threw everyone for a loop over the weekend when she posted a rather, erm, pointed message about Sarah Jessica Parker to Instagram. The actress, who played Samantha Jones for six seasons on Sex and the City, essentially called her former costar a “cruel hypocrite” for writing a condolences comment in light of her brother’s passing away. (Cattrall’s younger brother, Chris, was found dead in Canada last week.) “Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona,” Cattrall wrote, officially erasing any doubt she and Parker don’t have beef.
If you’ve been following Parker and Cattrall lately, though, then you know this comment isn’t coming out of nowhere. Parker revealed in September 2017 that Sex and the City 3 isn’t happening, despite the fact a script is already in place and most of the cast is on board. The narrative quickly became that Cattrall’s “diva demands” were the reason the movie was scrapped—a claim she vehemently denied, both on Twitter and during a tell-all interview with Piers Morgan, where she revealed she was “never friends” with her SATC costars and that Parker “could’ve been nicer” about the third film’s gossip.
Despite all of this, however, Parker contends there’s no feud between her and Cattrall. “I never talked about it, except [to say] that some of us were disappointed [about the movie not happening],” Parker told People magazine in its latest issue. “But I never responded to the conversation Kim had with Piers Morgan, where she said things that were really hurtful about me. We had this experience and it was amazing, and nothing will ever be like it.”
She continued, “We had a connection with an audience, and we had a connection with the city and with this crew, and we got to tell these crazy stories with each other. So I don’t want to mess with that. I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing that part. So there was no fight; it was completely fabricated, because I actually never responded. And I won’t, because she needed to say what she needed to say, and that is her privilege.”
This story is tricky because it’s not just tabloids pitting these two women against each other, as they do with so many female celebrities. If that were the case, it’d be easy to just write Cattrall and Parker’s “feud” off as petty nonsense fueled by our misogynistic culture. But the fact of the matter is Cattrall herself—not a “source” from a tabloid—made some cutting remarks about Parker on Instagram, so it’s clear there’s something very real going on here. At least to her.
But, even still, the last thing we need in 2018 is more women fighting with each other. If Parker and Cattrall aren’t friends, that’s fine—not everyone has to be friends—but perhaps it’s best for everyone if this Sex and the City 3 drama fades away for good.
