The Carrie Diaries’ Austin Butler Talks the Show’s Sex and the City Future
It’s been a while since The Carrie Diaries finale—we left off with (spoiler!) Carrie and Walt moving to NYC for the summer to discover their dreams after Carrie and Sebastian broke up again. I’ve been missing the show and filling the hole in my TV schedule with watching Sex and the City reruns for the umpteenth time, so I was uber-excited to get the chance to interview TCD‘s main fellas, Austin Butler (Sebastian) and Brendan Dooling (Walt), at the CW upfronts about what to expect this fall, where they see their characters in 10 years, and more.
Austin Butler
__Where will Sebastian be years from now, when Sex and the City takes place? His character obviously isn’t on the show. __
Austin Butler: I don’t know, that’s interesting. I talked to [Carrie Diaries writer] Amy B. Harris about it, and I thought he just sounds like he would end up in Rome or something—just moving away, not here. Not dealing with this drama because he’s not into the high school problems. I think he finally gets enough of it and heads out—that’s sort of my dream for him.
What are we going to see happen this fall?
AB: I don’t know! I don’t know how, or if, you can recover from that [breakup], so I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do with that. I was shocked when I read the episode. And I was sad by it because I thought, Oh no, that’s not cool! Humans make mistakes. From my point of view, if that happened to me I don’t know how I could forgive somebody. When you’re young and that sort of first love, it can be tumultuous because you never think that you’ll survive without that person, so we’ll see what happens.
Brendan Dooling
Where do you think Walt is during the Sex and the City era?
Brendan Dooling: That’s a great question. I’m wondering, do Carrie and Walt have a falling out? I have yet to read Summer in the City. I don’t know how much that reveals, but I have some homework for the summer.
Where do you see him in 10 years or so?
BD: I have to imagine he gets some of what he wants. He was interested in advertising. He knows what people want, and he knows what looks good. I see him working at Interview magazine or something like that, and hopefully he’s successful and gets out of the whole conflict of the ’80s and coming out and finds his place.
When you got the part, did you know how Walt’s story would evolve?
BD: Yep, I did. That was one of the first things they said before they flew me out to L..A for the network test—they said that’s the direction. That wasn’t daunting at all. There is such a thing as acting.
Can’t wait for the show to return! Where do you think Walt and Sebastian are during the SATC years? I like the guys’ answers—but I wish we had the backstory!
