This Exclusive Poster of NBC’s ‘Hairspray Live!’ Cast Will Have You Singing

Musical theater lovers, prepare to lose your minds.

NBC’s Hairspray Live! special is less than two months away, and we have an exclusive poster of the cast. (Yes, that includes pop star and cycling enthusiast Ariana Grande, who looks amazing as Penny Pingleton.)

Hairspray Live! is NBC’s fourth live musical event since the network revived the format in 2013. NBC’s production of The Wiz last year received widespread acclaim; prior to that, the network aired dazzling live productions of Peter Pan and The Sound of Music.

But Hairspray Live! might be NBC’s biggest, splashiest musical yet. The cast is stacked with musical theater veterans, including Kristin Chenoweth (Velma Von Tussle) and Harvey Fierstein, who played Edna Turnblad in the original Broadway cast and is reprising the role for NBC. Of course, there is Grande, and she’s joined by another pop music heavy-hitter: Jennifer Hudson. (We’re already predicting an Emmy nomination for Hudson’s turn as Motormouth Maybelle.)

Show business newcomer Maddie Baillio is playing the show’s lead role, Tracy Turnblad. The 20-year-old Texas native beat 1,000 hopefuls for the role during an open casting call in New York City. (NBC similarly hired a newcomer, Shanice Williams, for The Wiz’s lead role in 2015.)

Hairspray first arrived as a film in 1988, but it became an international smash when a musical version debuted on Broadway in 2002. In 2007, a Hairspray movie remake, starring Zac Efron and Amanda Bynes, hit theaters. Will NBC’s live production live up to these versions? Only time will tell, but all signs point to yes.
