Um, Shia LaBeouf Is Getting Naked and Drunk a LOT. He Claims It’s For His Roles, But Should We Be Concerned?

We spend a lot of time here at Obsessed wondering where various ’90s/’00s stars are now and/or flashing back to the younger years of their career. From the cast of Boy Meets World to even the Hannah Montana days of Miley Cyrus–there’s a lot of ground to cover. So sometimes a star transforms right before our very eyes, and we almost don’t realize it. Almost. Case in point? Shia LaBeouf.

Yes, Shia LaBeouf. Remember him from the Disney show Even Stevens?

Shia, however, is bragging that rather than act drunk he actually got drunk to play a moonshine drinker in the Prohibition era. Why? He wanted to look bloated with blood shot eyes for real–not with the help of a make-up artist. In fact, Shia was so drunk on set that he admitted to New York magazine that Mia “was ready to walk away from the movie.” Yup, he went on to reveal, “I was really pretty aggressive about it, and not in any kind of weird, strange way, but I don’t think she had ever experienced anything like that.”

Weird, strange and unnecessary are my initial thoughts on that story. And if Mia’s safety was at all at risk, I have to say that I don’t really know if “to each their own” applies here. Especially because Shia was thrown out of two separate bars on two separate occasions last year for being drunk. Maybe he was rehearsing for Lawless, but that still doesn’t make it okay when the safety of others is at risk.

Now, here’s what I find most fascinating. If Shia ever worried that he had yet to shed his Disney image, he can worry no more with his next role. He’s starring in Lars von Trier’s next movie Nymphomaniac, which is about one woman’s entire sexual life from beginning to end. And during all the sex scenes–including Shia’s–the actors will actually be having sex.

Shia told MTV that there is even a disclaimer at the top of the script that makes sure the cast knows everything they do will be done for real. “[Von Trier] is very dangerous. He’s the most dangerous dude that I’ve ever showed up for,” Shia said. “I’m terrified. I’m so terrified, which is why I have to go. We’ll see what happens.”

By the way? Shia just appeared 100% buck naked in the new Sigur Ros video for “Fjogur Piano.” Yup, the full monty. You can check out Shia in all his glory out here. Think of it as a preview for what’s to come in Nymphomaniac.

So here’s my question–do we give him props for pushing the limits and breaking out his comfort zone? Not to mention kudos for being comfortable with his body and sexuality? However, should we be a tad concerned about the part that drinking has played in all this? Or is it just hard to ever really let a “teen” star grow up?

__ Let me say this. I love an actor that refuses to play it safe, but I do wonder if I wouldn’t even think twice about Shia’s eccentric choices if he hadn’t started out on the Disney channel. What do you think?__
