Wait, Did The Weeknd Almost Give a Kidney to Selena Gomez?
It’s a fact of life that great songs can come from breakups—just ask Taylor Swift, SZA, Adele…the list goes on and on. So when fans listened to some of the more poignant lyrics on The Weeknd’s latest album, My Dear Melancholy (which dropped late Thursday night), they couldn’t help but think the inspiration was his 10-month relationship with Selena Gomez. (The couple broke up in October 2017).
You don’t have to look far to see why fans are on this train. The Weeknd (né Abel Tesfaye) bears his soul right off the bat. The first song on the album, “Call Out My Name,” opens with these regret-filled lyrics: “We found each other / I helped you out of a broken place / You gave me comfort / But falling for you was my mistake.” It’s clear he’s talking about a relationship here, and his most recent one was with, yup, Selena Gomez.
The real intrigue happens in the second verse, though. The Weeknd sings, “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life / Guess I was just another pit stop / ‘Til you made up your mind,” which many people think suggests he almost gave his kidney to Gomez. (She underwent a transplant last summer because of her lupus.)
Later, in “Hurt You,” The Weeknd laments, “When you’re with him, you close your eyes and think of me / Just call me up again / I’ll make you weak,” which might be a reference to Gomez rekindling her old relationship with Justin Bieber. “Privilege,” the last track on the album, is purely a breakup song, with Abel singing, “Enjoy your privileged life / ‘Cause I’m not gonna hold you through the night / We said our last goodbyes / So, let’s just try to end it with a smile.” Damn. Those words cut deep!
Naturally, Twitter is lit with fans giving their two-cents about all of this. Some are analyzing the lyrics even more, while others are jokingly thanking Gomez for breaking The Weeknd’s heart and inspiring such a great album.
WHEN HE SAID “I ALMOST CUT A PIECE OF MYSELF FOR YOUR LIFE” DOES THAT MEAN HE WOULD HAVE GIVEN HER HIS KIDNEY

But Gomez isn’t the only ex fans think The Weeknd is talking about on My Dear Melancholy,. Many are speculating “Wasted Times” is actually about Bella Hadid, whom he dated before Gomez. The Weeknd describes the female subject of the song as “equestrian,” and because Bella is a longtime competitive horseback rider, fans are connecting the dots. “Wasted times I spent with someone else / She wasn’t even half of you,” he sings. “And even though you put my life through hell / I can’t seem to forget ’bout you, ’bout you / I want you to myself.” Hmmm, so does this mean The Weeknd was thinking about Hadid when he was with Gomez? Because it’s pop music, we’ll probably never know for sure. So much drama! Breaking up really is hard to do.
