Watch Blake Lively Adorably Dedicate Her People’s Choice Award to “Girl Power”
Blake Lively: Consider yourself an honorary Spice Girl now—we’ll call you Gossip Girl. (Get it?!)
On January 18 the actress took home the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress for her role in The Shallows (she even beat out Meryl Streep, but that’s a whole other thing), and in true Blake form, she accepted the award repping hard for girls everywhere.
A beaming Lively took the stage and rambled on about loving Westworld and how excited she was, before launching into a speech about how she always wanted to be a Spice Girl. (Not where you thought she was going, did you?) But Lively explained to viewers that her mom taught her to pursue her ambitions, which brought her to her girl-group idols (we can relate) and how they defined “girl power for her.”
“My mama, she always taught me as a kid that you can’t ever let anyone limit you,” Lively said. “Don’t ever let anyone tell you there’s something you can’t do.”
Blake then spoke about how her win symbolized so much more, mainly how it focuses on the power of women in Hollywood and the need for females to speak up. Her profeminism words will have you screaming “chicas to the front” pretty quickly.
“When you guys voted for this, you didn’t just vote for this movie or me, but you voted for girl power,” she said. “Thank you for sending a message to Hollywood that people want to hear stories about women and we want to hear your stories, whether social media, your iPhone, whatever. Tell your stories, now more than ever. You need to be heard. You are valuable, and no one can limit you.”
And then, of course, Lively thanked her husband, Ryan Reynolds, and warned the rest of us to back off. Seriously.
