We Have News About Season 4 of Orange Is the New Black and a Gilmore Girls Revival Update
Netflix is the gift that just keeps on giving—at least when it comes to the Television Critics Association winter press tour. After Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos announced the premiere dates for all the new and returning shows (click here for that), Netflix rolled out panels for fan favorites such as Orange Is the New Black, Master of None, Jessica Jones, and more. Here’s everything you need to know.
Gilmore Girls
*Sarandos finally acknowledged that the Gilmore Girls four episode miniseries is in the works, but he wasn’t prepared to get into further details, explaining, “We’re still working on buttoning down everything before our announcements.” *
Master of None__
Aziz Ansari said that he’s not sure when the second season is coming (“That’s a Ted [Sarandos] question”), but “we’d love to do it. We’re figuring it out.”
*Ansari spoke about his parents becoming cult heroes on Master of None: “My mom doesn’t want to do any press. My dad is banned from doing press. It’s so crazy. When we were trying to cast that dad role, we wrote it based on my real dad. In hindsight, [my parents] did such a great job. They got recognized in a Chipotle a couple of weeks ago. It’s very surreal, but I’m happy people are enjoying them.”
*Breakout star Lena Waithe revealed that she’s gotten a lot of marriage proposals from fans, noting “you haven’t seen a gay woman like that on TV, especially a woman of color.”
Orange Is the New Black
*Creator Jenji Kohan gave her first preview for the themes of season four: “We sometimes start with a political agenda, stratification of people…I can’t tell you much more than that because we want it to be a surprise. But all the fun stuff like race, hate, [laughs] and some things from current events that we want to filter through our lens, but I’m just going to be vague about it.”
*Blair Brown, who plays Judy King, says “there are new unexpected alliances and animosities because of prison overcrowding.”
Laverne Cox expressed her gratitude for OITNB: “I am a black transgender woman from Alabama, and this job has changed my life. Season three had so many amazing things that I’ve never gotten to explore, and what happened at the end…that episode was so emotional, because that was the reality for so many transgender women. [In season four], I feel like I was pushed in ways that I didn’t anticipate. It was really challenging and it’s always wonderful as an actress.”
*Jenji Kohan also said that last season’s interest around Judaism will continue, but maybe not as prominently.
*Kohan is currently editing the season four finale right now, and said, “I’m really excited and exhilarated. All I want to do is talk about it and I can’t.”
*Kohan on the absence of Jason Biggs: “I do miss the connection of the outside world, but I think those connections begin to fray, so I think it was very organic that Larry [wasn’t there]. But I love Jason. The connection to the outside become more tenuous as [Piper] forgets more about the outside world, but it reflects her reality.”
__Jessica Jones
*The press learned that Netflix renewed Jessica Jones for a second season only a few hours after they informed executive producer Jeph Loeb. As a result, Loeb was not prepared to offer details for the new season.
*In response to Jones’ crazy sex scenes, star Krysten Ritter laughed that “if you’re gonna do a scene like that, you want to do it with Mike [Colter]!” EP Loeb added that that it’s important the series establish itself as an adult drama, and “in an adult drama, there’s an element of sexuality.”
*As for the Jones‘ season one finale episode, Ritter admitted that it was “very conflicting in terms of [Jessica’s] headspace.”
