Why Bernadette is the Biggest Badass on *Big Bang Theory*

The Big Bang Theory will probably never be known as a show that pushes boundaries and takes on serious subject matters a la Transparent, but the slow evolution of its characters is arguably just as impactful. When was the last time we had a bunch of misfits quite like Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Amy? These characters don’t just eschew societal norms; they proudly own their quirks—and audiences love them for it.

Over the years, we’ve witnessed their growth on so many levels—Raj learned to talk to (and date!) multiple women; Sheldon discovered that coitus could be enjoyable; Penny suspended her acting dreams to make an actual living; and Amy shed her uptight persona, while still staying true to the lovable dork within. Now, with Bernadette’s pregnancy, we’re seeing a full-on character unveiling that has been a long time coming.

Bernadette—with her squeaky voice and loud personality—could have easily been a one-note character, but in the hands of Melissa Rauch has become one of Big Bang‘s most beloved. Tonight’s episode furthered Dr. Rostenkowski-Wolowitz’s development. For the first time, the Ph.D.-holding microbiologist opened up about her inner struggle, revealing that she might lose a significant research project because of her pregnancy. “I’ve always been treated differently,” she confessed to Amy, referring to her height and looks. “Look at me! Listen to me!”

With one scene, Bernadette gave voice to millions of other women who have often felt judged because of their job, their appearance, or their personality. Sure, Bernadette wasn’t announcing some major secret or revelation, but at a time where gender and race have never been so hotly discussed, Bernadette was all of us. (We half-expected Hillary Clinton to walk in and say, “I hear ya, girl!”)

Unlike sitcoms of the ’80s and ’90s which were known for the occasional “very special episode,” The Big Bang Theory has subtly managed to include these charged, emotional scenes throughout the past few years. Whether it was Mrs. Wolowitz’s passing or the agony that Amy went through post-breakup, the show touches on honest moments better than most traditional sitcoms. This particular episode was no exception. Here are five other times Bernadette kicked ass tonight:

1. She Was True to Herself: While it’s safe to say that Bernadette is happy to be expecting her first child with her beloved, Howard, she is not the type to want to talk about it with others. Instead, she’d rather focus on work than discussing a potential nursery color scheme.

2. She Resolved a Conflict Like a Grown-Up: After Penny came clean about lying to Bernadette, she reacted in the most effective, yet simplest way possible. “Get out,” said a firm, but soft-spoken Bernadette, echoing her inner Miranda Priestly. There was no shouting match, no rushed apology; just Bernadette doing what she needed to do to process the fact that Penny betrayed her trust and then lied about it. Only later—and once she collected her thoughts—did Bernadette head over to Penny’s to talk it over. Maturity at its best.

3. She Spoke the Absolute Truth About How Women and Men Are Often Treated Differently In Their Careers: Appearances are never as they seem, and Bernadette brought the message home tonight. “I’ve always been treated differently. Look at me! Listen to me! The first thought isn’t, that’s a scientist; it’s I wonder if her mommy knows where she is. I’ve worked so hard to get where I am and I don’t want to get sent back to square one because I’m pregnant.” Is it wrong that Bernadette even has to feel this way in 2016? Of course it is. Does she have every reason to still stress about it though? Absolutely.

4. She Got the Fries: Listen, I’m always for the healthy option, but if you’re going to McDonald’s, never say no to the fries. Never. “What kind of lunatic goes to McDonald’s and get’s fruit?!” Bernadette screamed at Amy after she brought her a happy meal (hilarious) with apple slices. This might have been the most logical line ever uttered on a sitcom.

5. She Was Willing to Play Dirty to Get What She Wanted: By no means am I endorsing the use of threats or blackmail to get what you want, but sometimes, just like Kelly Ripa reminded us last spring, it’s good to remind the powers that be that you’re more than a business decision. Bernadette: “I reminded [my boss] he’s an old, rich, white guy, and I’m just a sweet, little pregnant lady not afraid to cry in front of a jury.”
