Why Did Straight Outta Compton Get Snubbed? And More Reactions We Had From the Oscar Nominations

Every year after the Oscar nominees are announced (see 2016’s full list here), we here on Glamour.com’s entertainment team spend the entire morning debating who should win, who got snubbed, and what surprised us the most about the news. And I’m sure you have a lot of opinions too. So read our reactions, below, and then let us know your thoughts on this year’s Oscar nominees in the comments. Let’s get started, shall we?

Anna Moeslein: OK, everyone, now that the Oscar nominations are finally here, what are your thoughts?!

Alexandra Schwartz: My first thoughts are that I’m surprised (but actually not surprised at all) that the Weeknd was nominated for Best Original Song!

Anna: I was shocked it wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe.

Alexandra: Also, I’m thrilled for Mark Ruffalo’s nod for Best Supporting Actor. He was always my pick, but he was never a guarantee. Fingers crossed for Spotlight to take home some gold.

Megan Angelo: I was glad to see Rachel McAdams get a Best Supporting Actress nom for Spotlight (she didn’t get a nod from the Globes). I thought her performance was overlooked, and I’m just really pulling for Spotlight to get it over The Revenant because who cares about The Revenant! By the same token, I thought Michael Keaton was snubbed, but I get why. Birdman was like a one-man Oscar show, so I feel like people are underwhelmed by his turn in Spotlight just one year later.

Lynsey Eidell: I’m thrilled for Rachel McAdams and Mark Ruffalo (basically everyone in Spotlight…). And I’m rooting for Eddie Redmayne over Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Actor (sorry, Leo). Don’t get me started on The Revenant. (I totally agree with your thoughts, Megan—who cares!)

Alexandra: I’m rooting for Eddie over Leo too!

Anna: Hah, so I guess I’m the only Team Leo one of the bunch? I totally get the buzz around him and the movie, and I think Alejandro G. Inarritu’s vision is extraordinary. Plus, when it comes to Best Actor, the academy loves a transformative role—and, yes, Eddie’s role was literally transformative. But he won last year, so I think the vote will go elsewhere.

Alexandra: Well, I’m definitely rooting for Alicia Vikander for supporting actress…

Megan: I’d also like to see Alicia win for supporting. I was a little surprised to see Kate Winslet get it at the Globes.

Lynsey: I know this might be controversial, but I would much rather see The Danish Girl in the Best Picture category than The Martian or Mad Max.

Anna: I’m still bitter about The Martian winning BEST COMEDY at the Globes. But for the Oscars, my two favorites in the Best Picture category are Brooklyn and The Big Short.

Lynsey: I would have loved to see Steve Carell get a nod for The Big Short—I thought his performance this year was much more awards-worthy than Foxcatcher last year.

Jessica Radloff: My biggest snub is Jacob Tremblay in Room. How on earth did the Academy overlook that?!

Lynsey: And no love for Star Wars or J.J. Abrams in Best Picture/Directing?

Megan: Not to take it away from the directors nominated, but that snapshot of the five of them lined up pretty much encapsulated Hollywood’s white male dominance problem.

Alexandra: Related: #OscarsSoWhite is now trending.

Anna: I was just about to mention that, Ali! While I think everyone who earned a nod was worthy this year, there were so many performances and movies that feel noticeably left out. Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation stands out particularly for me, and even though it lost its buzz on the awards circuit since the summer, I would have loved to see Dope and/or Shameik Moore score a nod. I’m also really shocked that Straight Outta Compton—one of the biggest movies of the year—only got one nom.

Megan: On that subject: While it’s not a sexy category traditionally, I think Original Screenplay is one of the most exciting this year. You have the only nomination for Straight Outta Compton, a nod for Ex Machina‘s cool script, and one for Inside Out (which was cowritten by Meg LeFauve, who’s featured in Glamour this month!). Very cool.
