7 Early ’00s Fashion Trends That Haven’t Come Back, but Totally Should

I was born in 1992, which if algebra serves me correctly, makes me ten years old in 2002. Old enough to watch Crossroads 52 times in one week despite it being terrible, but too young to appreciate Christina Aguilera’s—nay, Xtina’s—then-recently released Stripped.

Lately, the fashion world has seen a resurgence of many a ’90s fashion trend. Grunge has come back and died so many times since that we’re beginning to doubt the authenticity of its angst. Vintage Levi’s seem poised to stake a permanent claim on the street style circuit. And the choker is so ubiquitous that my 17-year-old sister thinks it was just invented.

But what of the trends that exemplified the early aughts? Blond and brunette streaked hair, popularized by Aguilera and Nicole Richie, triangle bras over tops, and pants slung so low that underwear was simply not an option? It’s only a matter of time before these cycle back into fashion. Behold, seven early ’00s fashion trends that haven’t returned yet but totally should.

1. The Single-Leg Pant Roll

Although LL Cool J wasn’t the first to roll up only one of his pants legs, he is considered responsible for the trend’s immense popularity in the early aughts. Even J.Lo followed suit. I see a bright future for this one…

2. Nameplate Necklaces

In 1999, Destiny’s Child sang what is now every 24-year-old’s go-to karaoke song “Say My Name.” It was around that time that Carrie Bradshaw plated her own name in gold and swung it around her neck into the next millennium, staking her claim in the cultural zeitgeist for, well, ever.

3. Handkerchief Hems

One of the defining silhouettes of the early aughts, handkerchief hems grazed navels and ankles, and nobody was immune. Adopters of the trend included Beyoncé, Jennifer Aniston, and, of course, Paris Hilton.

4. Tinted Sunglasses

Where would Mary-Kate and Ashley be without their pink and purple tinted sunglasses of yore? I beg them to think of their humble beginnings, and fully expect these bad boys to make their debut at the Row’s next show.

5. Newsboy Caps

I have a confession to make, I wore a Kangol hat for the better part of 2003, and I consider that year to be the zenith of my popularity.

6. Bubble Skirts

Okay, so judging from the likes of Monse and Louis Vuitton, this trend might already be back. I draw the line at denim underneath, though; the world is just not ready.

7. Low-Slung Cargo Pants

Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani…if you were an It Girl in the early aughts, you wore your cargo pants dangerously low.

Now how about some current trends? Let model Iskra Lawrence show you how they’re done, 2016 style.
