MYANMAR— There was a beauty competition in Yangon, Myanmar, last week where the contestants dressed up in, uh, vegetable-covered clothing. Hm, I like my greens and all, but would you ever wear Romaine in your hair?
EUROPE— Before women’s pret-a-porter fashion weeks kick off sometime in February, there’s men’s fashion weeks in Paris and Milan—which means that right now, the folks over at Models.com are busy gathering show packages (that’s promotional model cards agencies are submitting for fashion shows). No matter what your taste in models, there’s something for everyone—what do you think of Mr. Sam Whitman, above? Rowr, right?
TOYLAND— Here’s a hypothetical situation I never considered until just now: What if Barbie were (1) a real person and (2) a hoarder? Check out artist Carrie M. Becker’s project “Barbie Trashes Her Dreamhouse”—a photo essay of Barbie-imagined-as-a-hoarder: a kitchen overflowing with unwashed (miniature) dishes, a filthy laundry room, and a bedroom stacked high with still-unpacked cardboard boxes.
ENGLAND— Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton and Prince Harry (!) wore matching $465 Le Chameau Wellington boots on Christmas Eve. Check out their cute matchy-matchy look here.
NEW YORK— Ecco Domani Wines announced the winners of its annual Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation awards this morning—they are Correll Correll, Eighteenth, Haus Alkire, Sunhee, Tim Coppens (menswear), Titania Inglis (sustainable design). Each winner will receive $25,000 and a showcase of their collections at New York Fashion week.
LONDON— Queen Elizabeth II has announced her 2012 honors list. This year’s honorees include fashion boldface names such as Lulu Kennedy (founder of Fashion East), designer Barbara Hulanicki (right, who founded the iconic 1960s London label Biba), shoe designer Emma Hope, and Christopher Inman of the British Fashion Council.
LONDON— Just arrived in London and soon to appear in magazines around the world (fingers crossed!): David Beckham’s mostly-naked underwear ad for H&M. Get a sneak peek of the handsome footballer in all his underpanted glory over at The Fashion Spot.
THE INTERNET— Seriously you guys, this is happening (again). It looks like Kanye West will definitely be forging ahead with his fashion collection—which, uh, did so well with the critics last season. He’s just launched a DW by Kanye Twitter account.
ASPEN— We love you her, but why is Melanie Griffith wearing this thing on her head?
LONDON— Are you serious about your designer jeans? No, I mean, Serious—that’s right, italicized and with a capital S. If you are, then check out this Method Design steamer trunk—a solid ash wood, uh, trunk specially designed to transport your denim. Refinery 29 notes: “Though it’s probably not as handy for a weekend trip as your Samsonite, serious denim-philes might consider this their version of the Louis Vuitton trunk.” It’ll be on display at Earls Court this fall from September 22-25.
