There are still at least four steamy weeks of summer left, and I plan on spending as much of that time as possible bronzing my bod at the beach. And I’ll be wearing a teeny bikini by one of my favorite swimwear designers, Brette Sandler. Meet her, after the jump.
Brette Sandler (that’s her above, lounging on the beach in her own design) was still a student at Parsons when her very fashion-forward swimwear line started attracting serious attention a few years ago. She asked some friends and random strangers on the beach to pose for her lookbook, schlepped her own samples to magazines around town, and eventually landed herself in the pages of major magazines like Teen Vogue (full disclosure: I wrote the first-ever piece about Brette for Time Out New York!). Cut to the present day, when her stuff is sold at Barneys New York, Lindsay Lohan is a fan, and Bar Refaeli wore one of her suits on a little something known as the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. We asked Brette to dish on her inspiration, muses, and lifelong love of the beach.
My favorite place to be creative is my personal desk in my apartment. It becomes a design pit year-round.
The first swimsuit I remember wearing is…when I was just two years old I had a bikini where the top was just two daisies – I LOVED it.
Lately I’ve been really inspired by graphic geometric and retro prints. I had an aha! creative moment during a recent trip to a store in Tribeca called Second Hand Rose – it’s an amazing archive of wallpapers that date all the way back to 1920 – some fabulous print inspirations.
My favorite vacation spot is Costa Rica, which happens to be the inspiration locale for my resort 2010 collection.
Right now, my closet has over 100! swimsuits in it.
On a typical weekend away, I usually pack…for my weekend trips to the Hamptons I have at least 8 to 10 suits to choose from.
If a girl can only buy one swimsuit this summer, it should be a monokini – it’s a throw back to the late 80’s/early 90’s and can be totally flattering and sexy without showing too much skin.

Elle Macpherson has the best bikini body in the world. She’s a total bikini icon.
If swimwear were art, I’d be a minimalist or abstract expressionist.
The 00s version of 40s pinup girls would have to be the Kardashian sisters – they’ve got the curves and love flaunting them!
Always in my beach bag: My iPod, Blackberry, SPF 15, oil, and a striped beach towel big enough for two!__
Bikinis and high heels: a Do or a Don’t? A definite DON’T – bikinis are meant to be worn with bare feet
The most expensive thing in my closet is a Maison Martin Margiela dress. The least expensive thing is__some great tops from the $7 stores in Hong Kong__
The best movie I’ve seen recently is *Valentino:The Last Emperor.*And the best book I’ve read is Positive Energy by Judith Orloff
I love to collect…I’ve been accumulating and actually making A LOT of bracelets lately which I wear just about everywhere.
My favorite color combo is black and white.
My first fashion icons were__Ali MacGraw, the true 1970’s boho, Cindy (Suzanne Somers) from Three’s Company, the California beach babe, and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, for defining New York City chic.__
This summer, I’ve been living in __sheer white burn-out tees
