Emma Watson Is Our Style Icon of the Week: Her Best Looks Ever
When Hermione Granger Emma Watson presented an Oscar with cutie Joseph Gordon-Levitt two Sundays ago, my Twitter feed pretty much BLEW UP. The British thesp is just so classy, beautiful, talented, well-spoken, smart (this May, she’ll take time off acting to complete her final year at Brown), and always so chic. (Never mind that the entire social media world began shipping the two as a couple.)
It’s sometimes hard to remember that Emma is only 23 years old—not just because she’s been on the scene since 2001, when the then-11-year-old made her debut in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (her first professional gig ever, BTW) but also because she’s just poised and elegant beyond her years. Plus, her sense of style. Given all that, we must name her our Glamour Style Icon of the Week. Since Emma’s been making red carpet appearances for 13 years now, it was pretty hard to filter her best outfits down to just 10 looks. But here’s my best attempt:
I just had to start with this amazing moment, just for you Potterheads out there. In 2004, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma dropped by MTV’s TRL to promote Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Remember how Hermione was this little girl, and then one day—BAM—she’s this red carpet bombshell? This Marc by Marc Jacobs military jacket moment (accessorized with youthfully chic Chanel CC flower earrings, Converse Chucks, and her Calvins peeking out of her jeans) might have been during the start.
By 2007, the designers had their eye on Emma—here she is at the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation party clad in exquisitely feathered and embellished Chanel Couture.
At the National Movie Awards in 2008, Emma looked lovely in white and silver Alexander McQueen.
In 2009, Emma started her stint as the face of Burberry—first for the British heritage label’s fall 2009 campaign, followed by the spring 2010 one. Which also meant a wardrobe full of fabulous Christopher Bailey designs, like this delectably gorgeous gold minidress she wore at the house’s runway show during London Fashion Week.
The year 2010 marked the penultimate installment of the Harry Potter franchise and the debut of Emma’s risk-taking but on-the-mark pixie cut. (Hey, we did call her the new Audrey Hepburn, right?). Here she is at the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—Part I, nailing it in a kicky black lace cocktail frock by Rafael Lopez and the new coif.
Her pixie grew out into an adorably chic bob by the release of the last Harry Potter movie in 2011. She opted for a dramatically beaded and ruffled Oscar de la Renta gown for the London premiere.
I also love that Emma knows how to dress young and edgy but keeps it classy—all the time. This embroidered, peplumed and sheer paneled Erdem dress for the 2012 Toronto Film Festival premiere of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Just lovely.
Emma does rebel-glam in a Prabal Gurung gown at the punk-themed Met Gala in 2013. Of course, she looks impossibly elegant even in cutouts.
While Emma’s Dior Couture dress-over-pants outfit for the Golden Globes proved divisive, the whole look was sartorially adventurous. You have to give her credit for thinking outside the box while still managing to look so modern and polished.
And one more look at her top and ball-gown-skirt by Vera Wang for the Oscars (minus JGL though, sorry).
Which look is your favorite? I can’t decide between the Burberry or the Prabal, and I can’t wait to see what more she has in store for us!
