In Memory Of Amy Winehouse: 5 Style Moments We’ll Never Forget
By now you gals have probably heard the tragic news that Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment over the weekend at just 27 years old. While we’ll miss her gravelly voice and seriously-soulful-beyond-her-years music, it was her wild, inimitable style that defined her persona and made her stand out from the crowd.
A few of our favorite style memories of Amy?
1. That beauty routine You can’t become an icon without cultivating a signature look–just ask Anna Wintour!–and Amy’s beehive was one of the most instantly recognizable ‘dos of the decade. Add in retro-style winged eyeliner and a bunch of tats, and you’ve got a bold antidote to the red carpet clone.
2. Serving as muse to Karl Lagerfeld. Say what you will about her style, but it got the official Chanel stamp of approval in December 2007, when Lagerfeld cited her as inspiration and gave his runway models her signature look. “She’s a style icon,” he said at the time of his London show. “She is a beautiful, gifted artist. And I very much like her hairdo. I took it as an inspiration. Because, in fact, it was also Brigitte Bardot’s hairdo in the late Fifties and Sixties. And now Amy has made it her own style. So, when I saw her, I knew it was the right moment. Amy…she is the new Brigitte.”
3. Bringing back denim shorts, wife beaters, and ballet flats Long before the word “jorts” made an appearance in our vernacular, Amy was rocking ’em on a practically daily basis. The only wardrobe item that made even more frequent appearances? Her much-loved ballet flats–she was loyal to the pink satin/actual dancing shoe variety–and trusty white tanks.
4. Designing a line for Fred Perry The songstress made her vintage-inspired look available to the mainstream in fall 2010, when she released a line of polos, twinsets, and skirts under the label Amy Winehouse for Fred Perry. And from the sounds of your comments, you gals found yourselves surprised at how cute it was!
5. Always staying true to her own style No strapless ballgowns or tiaras for this bride, thankyouverymuch. When Amy tied the knot with longtime love Blake Fielder-Civil in Miami Beach a few years back, she stuck with her classically cool formula of 1950s-style pinup girl in a floral halter dress. And that’s just one more reason why her highly original look will continue to endure long after she’s gone…
Are you dolls as sad about Amy’s death as we are? Leave your thoughts and condolences in the comments section below…
