Who Can Forget These Incredible Fashion Moments From the MTV VMA Red Carpet?
The 2017 MTV VMAs are happening this Sunday, and it’s the kind of awards show at which style memories are made. The Video Music Awards typically have one of those red carpets where anything goes and, as such, stars feel a little more liberty to take risks. Sometimes it’s awesome and…sometimes it involves raw meat.
Who better to kick off the first-ever VMAs in 1984 than pop legend Madonna? In true “Material Girl” fashion, she wore an all-white look with metallic accessories.
Nearly a decade after Madonna’s monochromatic look, TLC proved that these get-ups were still very much award-show-appropriate at the 1995 VMAs. Instead of dresses, though, they opted for white crop tops and loose pants.
The Spice Girls made their stateside VMAs debut in 1997. While Posh Spice, Baby Spice, Scary Spice, Ginger Spice, and Sporty Spice all had their own signature looks, they shared a mutual love of short hems and platform shoes on the carpet.
Back in 1998, Gwen Stefani was in the middle of her No Doubt heyday, and her funky style was everything: She eschewed the dress in favor of a fuzzy triangle bikini top because, why not?
Also in 1998: Rose McGowan walked the carpet with then-beau Marilyn Manson in a dress that was hardly a dress. Skinny chains gave her some coverage, but it was mostly all skin and a G-string.
Compared with Miss McGowan, Lil’ Kim’s infamous purple pasties felt like a lot of outfit. The sparkly jumpsuit would have been attention-grabbing enough on its own, but add in that extra skin and wow.
In 2000, Jennifer Lopez attended the awards show with P. Diddy in a combo of a white crop-top, jeans, and a bandana that really showed her early-aughts style.
Before Beyoncé was Beyoncé, she was on the scene with Destiny’s Child. The trio attended red carpet events in a lot of matching outfits, including the orange and blue looks they rocked at the 2001 MTV VMAs.
Christina Aguilera came to the 2002 VMAs repping all of our favorite early-aughts trends: a newsboy cap, colorful highlights, halter crop top, and super-low-rise denim skirt.
When Britney Spears walked the red carpet in this Madonna-inspired outfit back in 2003, it might not have totally registered as being major. It wasn’t until her performance later—and the three-way lip-lock with Christina Aguilera and Madge—that it really became iconic.
2006 will be remembered as the year that Fergie went solo—musically, at least: On the VMAs’ red carpet, however, the “London Bridge” singer arrived in Burberry shorts with her own crew of royal guards.
When Cher showed up at the 2010 VMAs, of course she brought her signature out-there style along with her: In place of an over-the-top gown, she wore a sheer bodysuit covered in crystals, topped with a tough leather jacket.
But try as Cher might, there was no way she could’ve eclipsed Lady Gaga in all her raw meat glory.
The big celebrity news of the 2011 ceremony was the extra curve that Beyoncé was rocking. During her performance onstage, the singer slid her hand over her belly to announce that, yup, there was a baby coming. You could see it in her red Lanvin gown, too.
For the 2014 VMAs red carpet, Katy Perry did an homage to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake with a denim Versace dress, which matched her date’s get-up, obviously.
In 2015, Miley Cyrus arrived in an Atelier Versace look that was basically some straps for a top and a skirt that looked like it was made of chandelier crystals. It certainly earned her this spot on our list of most memorable outfits ever.
This was also a big style year for Taylor Swift: The “Bad Blood” singer chose a noticeably edgier look than past appearances with an Ashish sequin houndstooth crop top and matching pants….
… and accessorized her shimmery look with the famous “Bad Blood” crew—among the attendees were Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, and Selena Gomez.
Even better than one memorable look? Two, together. Beyoncé walked the 2016 white carpet in a feathery Francesco Scognamiglio dress—and with her daughter, Blue Ivy, in tow.
But Blue Ivy wasn’t Beyoncé’s only guest of the evening: She was also joined by the women featured in the “Formation” music video, which won Video of the Year last year. And yes, they all looked amazing.
