You Won’t Believe What the Chanel Runway Looked Like in 1996
You can bet on seeing a few constants at every Chanel show.
Chain-link details, doses of tweed, cap-toe footwear of some sort, and the iconic interlocking C logo on display in myriad new ways are all but guaranteed to be present at tomorrow’s show at Paris Fashion Week. But beyond those essentials, designer Karl Lagerfeld is adept at taking our breath away with his over-the-top concepts. Whether it’s shipping an actual iceberg into the famed Grand Palais (it happened in fall 2010) or re-creating a supermarket replete with Chanel-branded groceries (true story, fall 2014), we can’t wait to see what the Kaiser has in store for tomorrow’s show. Until then, let’s take a walk down memory lane to see what the Chanel runway looked like in 1996.
With Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, pigtails, and yes, pasties, it’s most definitely a feast for the eyes.

Cindy Crawford rocks a terry cloth string bikini in oh-so-’90s baby blue.
Eva Herzigova was early on the pajama trend—Lagerfeld paired hers with a teeny-tiny string bikini.
Carla Bruni, who later became the First Lady of France, also got to wear the pasties-cum-string bikini with logo-laden boxers.
Here’s Lagerfeld at the finale flanked by supers-of-the-moment Linda Evangelista and Claudia Schiffer.
