March for Our Lives just got support from two celebrities who don’t often make political statements: Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. On Friday, the singers and close friends took to their respective Instagram accounts to back the student-led gun control protest, which is planned to take place on Saturday in Washington, D.C., and over 800 joint events worldwide.
“No one should have to go to school in fear of gun violence. Or to a nightclub. Or to a concert. Or to a movie theater. Or to their place of worship,” Taylor wrote, captioning a copy of the March for Our Lives poster. “I’ve made a donation to show my support for the students, for the March for Our Lives campaign, for everyone affected by these tragedies, and to support gun reform. I’m so moved by the Parkland high school students, faculty, by all families and friends of victims who have spoken out, trying to prevent this from happening again.”
“Protect kids, not guns! #MarchForOurLives” Selena wrote, posting the March for Our Lives poster as well.

These statements are significant moves for both singers, who tend to stay out of politics. Taylor is famously quiet about political issues, to the point that she’s been heavily criticized by some fans, although she set an important example last year when she testified at her own sexual assault trial, winning a symbolic $1 after the jury found a DJ guilty of groping her in 2013. For the most part, Selena has also remained pretty apolitical, her “Nasty Woman” T-shirt at the 2017 Grammys being the most explicit statement she’s made recently.
Selena and Taylor aren’t the only celebrities taking a stand behind March for Our Lives. While it’s unclear whether the two singers will actually attend the march, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Jennifer Hudson, and others have pledged to be there. The march, which is organized by survivors of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting in February, has also received sizable donations from big names like Oprah, Amal and George Clooney, Gucci, and Joshua Kushner, brother of Jared.
