Lady Gaga Messed Up the Lyrics to ‘Bad Romance’ in Concert and Recovered Like a Pro
On a fateful day in October 2009, Lady Gaga—a.k.a Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, a.k.a Mother Monster—released arguably her biggest single of all time: “Bad Romance.” The song cemented Gaga’s place as a pop powerhouse and caused millions of youths around the world to chant nonsensical gibberish in broad daylight. (Seriously, if you didn’t run around screaming, “Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah,” at least once in 2009, then what were you doing?) Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime performance this year reminded us that “Bad Romance” is a damn good song, a rare pop confection with lyrics you can’t get out of your head.
Which is why it’s surprising Gaga flubbed one of the verses in concert earlier this week. The pop star kicked off her Joanne World Tour in Vancouver on Tuesday (July 1), and she made a slight snafu during her performance of “Bad Romance.” Instead of singing, “I want your horror / I want your design / ‘Cause you’re a criminal / As long as you’re mine” during the second verse of “BR,” Gaga did, well, this:

Listen closely and you’ll hear that Gaga replaced “‘Cause you’re a criminal / As long as you’re mine” with “I want the psycho, baby in your mind.” But was this intentional? Was Gaga just sick of the “Bad Romance” lyrics, so she switched things up for shits and giggles? Was she making a subtle plea to Ryan Murphy to make American Horror Story season eight Psycho-adjacent?
Our guess is she just had a momentary memory lapse and had to improvise. It happens to singers all the time, but the fact Gaga didn’t miss a beat is a testament to her amazing talent. LG is a professional through and through, and, honestly, we kind of dig the new lyrics. Gaga should drop this live version on iTunes. We’d definitely put our money down—and our paws up.
