3 Crazy-Gorgeous Eyeshadow Colors You’re Destined to Wear This Spring

Whether or not you’re a pinner, if you’re a makeup wearer, here’s something interesting to add to your bag of tricks: the exact cosmetics colors that people are currently pinning like crazy. Pinterest has begun tracking the popularity of colors in fashion and beauty and announcing colors of the year, a la Pantone. Here are its 2016 picks for fashion, but when it comes to beauty, it’s highlighting three colors that have noticeably spiked in popularity since the start of this year: lavender, dark green, and deep blue.

The methodology for identifying these three stand-out shades involved the company’s Pinsights team analyzing all the beauty-specific pins (which totaled 1.2 billion in 2015—yes, that’s just beauty) using RGB values, which define the colors shown in each photo. Beauty pins involving lavender and dark green and blue are up 25 to 30 percent already this year—and we can see why, given these recent eye makeup examples we’ve spotted on the runways and some of our favorite celebrities. Get ready to pin some bold-makeup inspo of your own, ladies.

Lavender:

Remember the time Rihanna rocked a matte lavender lid in February and managed to make it look edgy, giving us all major ’90s flashbacks—in a good way?

And, of course, we’ve seen Lupita Nyong’o wear shimmery lavender to gorgeous effect.

Deep Blue:

Model Joan Smalls redefined “slay” with her smoky sea-blue eyes at the CFDA Awards.

A play that’s easier to pull off IRL: At the Jonathan Saunders spring 2016 show, eyes were rimmed using MAC Chromagraphic Pencil in Marine Ultra for an edgy pop of color.

An even more ahead-of-the-curve idea: Generously and strategically coat blue mascara on top and bottom for a graphic lash-art effect, as seen at Mary Katrantzou.

For an eye-opening twist on your basic mascara look, apply multiple coats of a bright shade to the center of your top and bottom lashes.

Dark Green:

At Monique Lhuillier, makeup artist Val Garland swiped on a crisp stripe of green—that MAC Chromagraphic again, this time in Landscape Green. Matching nail tips added to the pop-art vibes.

We’re still haunted by the gold-and-green sheen that famed makeup artist Pat McGrath painted onto Kendall Jenner’s eyes for the Versace couture show last summer.

Then there was the time McGrath made blue and green meet at the Diane Von Furstenberg show and this magic happened (hi again Kendall!).

And here you thought you were going to get away with wearing your same-old neutral eye makeup this spring. You could try, but good luck getting these way-more-fun colors out of your head. If you’re excited to dabble in one of these shades, you could enlist help from a few of the most-pinned makeup items of the moment, according to Stephanie Kumar, partner insights lead at Pinterest: the Tory Burch Catch Eye Shadow Palette, which contains both a deep blue and a lavender; Orglamix Blue Eyes Smokey Collection; and the Jill Harth Sky Eye Shadow Triple Play.
