Evan Rachel Wood: “They Said I Didn’t Have the Face for Short Hair”

Evan Rachel Wood is not one for conforming. Whatever the huge beauty trend of the moment is, she’s likely to be doing something far from it. But that do-you outlook has served her well, even if there have been learning experiences. Here, the Westworld and Into the Forest star, and front woman of the new Gucci Guilty Eau perfume, shares her beauty highs and lows.

Her beauty vibe: “Androgynous and a little daring is my personal look.”

Her biggest beauty regret: “When I was in my early twenties, I plucked out all my eyebrows and drew them on. I was going for a goth-y, more grungy version of a pinup—I was so into these Old Hollywood movie stars. It was really fun at the time, but I look back and I’m like, ‘Why did you pluck all your eyebrows out, dude?’ ”

Her first fragrance memory: “When I was a teenager, I would sneak into Victoria’s Secret and spray Strawberries and Champagne body mist on myself. I was too shy to buy it. I would just go in, spray, and run out.”

Her current scent: “I’ve worn Gucci Guilty for years; it’s fiery and sweet. Gucci Guilty Eau is a bit softer, more romantic, and ethereal.”

Her favorite-smelling place on earth: “Arizona has the loveliest air—it’s green and fresh but also smoky and desert-y. Whenever I go to Sedona, Arizona, I come back smelling like campfire.”

Her outlook-changing haircut: “Growing up, somebody said I didn’t have the face for short hair. But I think your hair can change the way you feel about yourself. I cut my hair into a mohawk when I was 23. That was [five years ago], and I’ve never really grown it back. I felt such freedom.”

Her short-hair staple: This Oribe dry texturizing spray gives you volume and shape without making your hair crackly or sticky.”

Her glowy skin secret: “Stila’s Illuminating Beauty Balm has SPF but also has a slight sheen to it.”

On-set beauty essentials: “When I have those really early call times, I show up and have to deal with my undereyes. So I get those little angel-wing-shaped eye masks. Then I just have coffee and breakfast with these big cooling things under my eyes.”

Her in-flight plan: “A dermatologist told me to drop chlorophyll into my water when I travel. I’ve noticed it really helps clear up my skin, especially with the drying, recycled air on a plane.”

Her moving-vehicle makeup strategy: “I was once on a tour bus and had to put makeup on and curl my hair, but the only outlet was outside the bathroom. And the door kept closing, so I had to hike my foot up to prop the door and stretch the cord through. The mirror was somewhere behind me. It was like a game of Twister.”

Her acne-prevention trick: “Relaxing. I’ve struggled with acne my whole life. And I know that when I’m stressed or overwhelmed, my skin’s going to go nuts.”
