Exactly What Makeup to Wear With a Sparkly Holiday Outfit
At last night’s premiere of Oprah Winfrey’s new movie Selma, actress Tessa Thompson wore a stunning and very sparkly Rodarte gown—so the goal was for her makeup to be equally dressed-up yet in a softer, less glitzy way, so as not to compete with the dress (she wasn’t going for the Vegas showgirl effect). Her makeup artist, Nick Barose, shared these tips for makeup that looks natural yet finished and glamorous, for times when your outfit’s got a lot of twinkle.
-
Keep your palette neutral, but play with subtle shimmer and shine. “Add a luxe, ethereal glow to the skin,” Barose says. “On Tessa, after I applied pink cheek stain—which by itself might look too natural—I dusted shimmery bronzy highlighting blush on top to add the finishing touch.” (He used Sisley L’Orchidee Highlighting Blush.) You can also dust this down your chest, arms, and legs to give your skin a golden glow in a skin-baring outfit.
-
Get movie-star brows. “Soft, nude-toned makeup with soft brows will look too laid-back,” Barose says. “Fill in your brows to make them fuller and longer. Just don’t go too dark, and keep it feminine. Think Grace Kelly brows.” On Tessa, he filled in her arches and elongated her brows a bit, sketching Sisley Phyto-Sourcils Perfect Brow Pencil in Cappuccino along the brows and filling them in on top and bottom.
-
Layer lipstick and gloss. “Nude lipstick alone might look too daytime and gloss alone might be too simple,” Barose says. “So I dabbed on a deep nude-tone lipstick (Sisley Phyto-Rouge Hydrating Long Lasting Lipstick in Rosewood) then dotted a few dots of nude gloss on the center to add sheen.” (Sisley Phyto Lip Gloss in Bois de Rose)
