We Made Lucy Hale and Her Makeup Artist Play the Newlywed Game?Come See!
*Proof Lucy Hale and Kelsey Deenihan spend too much time together: Neither saw what the other had written before flipping these boards over.*Five years ago, if you had asked any girl on the street who so-and-so’s makeup artist or hairstylist was, you’d most likely get a blank stare. But thanks to the rise of Instagram, suddenly the pros behind your favorite celebrities’ signature looks are becoming stars in their own rights—amassing thousands, if not millions, of followers. And along with this new 24/7 all-access, behind-the-scenes pass, something truly awesome has happened: We’ve been able to follow the budding friendships between celebs and their glam squads. So much so, that sometimes it even feels like we’re a part of their group. This dynamic sparked the idea for the series Beauty BFFs.
In this edition, we caught up with Lucy Hale and her go-to makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan at the mark. HQ in New York City, and challenged them to play our version of the Newlywed Game. (You know that old-school game show where the host asked recently married couples all sorts of random questions about the other—that one!) They weren’t allowed to know the questions beforehand or look at what the other was writing on her answer board. Follow along and listen in on how well these beauty BFFs really know each other. (Hint: They probably put you and your main B to shame.)
Lipstick: What is Lucy’s ultimate makeup obsession?
Hale: “Bold lip with strong lash line.” Deenihan: “Smoked eye with lashes (or whatever she wrote).”
Kelsey Deenihan: We were half right!
Lucy Hale: Well, kind of half right. Recently, I’ve been obsessed with a bold lip and a strong lash line. I used to be a smoky eye girl and would only stick to what I was used to, but Kelsey helped me break out of that and try crazy lip colors. I’ve always loved a good strong lash, though, because I feel the best with it.
KD: When we started working together, I think she felt like herself mostly with a big eye and a neutral lip. But we’ve been trying new things.
LH: I feel like I’m a fun person, so why not try things that reflect my personality. I’m fun, right?
KD: Yeah, you’re fun! That was like halvsies. That was a great start.
[Note: Hale is wearing mark. Lipclick Matte Full Color Lipstick in Vixen here.]
Lipstick: What’s one beauty look Kelsey would never give Lucy?
Hale: “Bare eye or blue liner.” Deenihan: “Bare eye!!”
KD: I think Lucy really likes to open her eyes with lashes and smoky shadows. Even if we do a bold lip, like what she’s wearing now, she still has some color and definition on the lids. So to go from doing a lip and an eye to an absolutely bare eye would be a big deal.
LH: Like I said, I would try more of a bare eye now.
KD: It would just be such a far departure from what she normally does.
LH: I did a shoot yesterday where I didn’t even have mascara on. You would have died. Kelsey had to be in L.A., so she wasn’t there for the shoot. There was almost nothing [on my face], just lip color. It was cool. It looked very editorial.
Lipstick: What is Lucy’s favorite song to get ready to?
Hale: “Anything country!” Deenihan: “Something country. Meow, meow, meow…”
LH: We were both so generic.
KD: We both drew notes!
LH: I listen to different country Pandora stations: Keith Urban, Shania Twain, Rascal Flatts. We both have a deep love of Nashville and country music, so we relate on musical tastes. It’s really fun.
Lipstick: Describe your favorite memory of working together in only four words.
Hale: “Award show tiny curls!” Deenihan: “Scaring Scotty Cunha dead.”
KD: Award show tiny curls! That is amazing. We have to explain these.
LH: I once had a hairdo that was really bad. The curls were not what I wanted. We always look at pictures from that day together, and we’re like, well, I won’t ever look as bad as that again.
Lipstick: And what about the other story?
LH: So, Scotty Cunha is a hairdresser we work with sometimes…
KD: He had come into a rehearsal when Lucy was doing the CMA Country Christmas last year. When she walked into the room, Scotty jumped out of a wardrobe, and Lucy just dropped to the floor, she was so scared. So a day or two later, we had it all planned out [to get him back]. We were waiting in our hotel room, and Scotty came in all hot to trot. Meanwhile, I was hiding in the closet and Lucy was filming. He had no idea. He was on the phone talking about conditioner, and that went on for a good two to three minutes. Then he walked toward the bathroom, and I jumped out of the closet. I’ve never heard him sound so manly. He goes uhhhhhh [loud, low screaming sound].
LH: I got it all on video, it’s amazing. We’ve had some good times clearly.
Lipstick: Draw the emoji that best represents the other person.
LH: Literally this is Kelsey at all times. Do the face.
KD: You’re a little devil.
LH: I’m a little devil child.
KD: No, this is a joke.
LH: No, she’s serious. I’m mischievous.
KD: She’s up to no good. No, she’s not a devil. I just wanted to draw one.
Lipstick: Which of you owns more lipsticks?
Hale: “Kels.” Deenihan: “Lucy.”
LH: Really, you’re a makeup artist?
KD: But for my kit or for myself? Personally, you definitely have more.
LH: Yeah, you have no lipsticks for yourself. I have somewhere between 50 to 70. They’re all in different purses. I probably have 20 in a container and 20 more that are packed away and not usable. I have so much lipstick and lip balm, it’s crazy. They’re just scattered everywhere. I have a lot of maroons and plums right now. But my collection of lip balm is just pure lip balm like Blistex and Lucas’ Papaw cream.
Lipstick: Who has the bigger sweet tooth?
Hale: “Luc.” Deenihan: “Me?”
LH: We both kind of do. We both had fro-yo last night.
KD: I love bread pudding. There’s no question about it. If there’s bread pudding on a menu, I have to eat bread pudding.
LH: I have a Jolly Rancher drawer in my house. I love Jolly Ranchers. I have an oral fixation, so I always have to have gum or mints or something. I’m a big fro-yo person, but I like the toppings way more than the fro-yo, so I go for the candy. I love sweet-and-sour stuff. And cherry is my favorite Jolly Rancher flavor all the way.
KD: Oh! And I love gummy bears. I think “gummy bear lover” is in my about me on my Instagram.
LH: Was that your first AIM screenname? Gummybearlover?
KD: Ha! It was actually Blueeyes366. And I remember my best friend was zucchini12.
LH: I feel like one of my first ones was kickinit1234.
KD: When I was a little older, I changed mine to wakeboarder29. I got sporty.
Lipstick: Who is more of a morning person?
Hale: “Me!!!” Deenihan: “Kelsey.”
LH: What? I didn’t say you weren’t.
KD: What about this morning?
LH: I was happy as pie! What are you talking about?
KD: My text. Remember the text you sent me this morning?
LH: Oh, yeah…OK, just because you were more awake doesn’t mean you were in a better mood.
KD: Last night, she was like let’s meet in the lobby at 7 A.M. and walk to Starbucks before we go to breakfast. And I was like, “You need to text me because I’ll be up and ready, and for some reason if you’re not, I’m not going to go down.”
LH: I sent her a text at 6:45 A.M. that said, “You were right. I’m really tired.”
