Whoa, Gwen Stefani Looks Unrecognizable Without Her Usual Cat Eye and Red Lip

Last night’s 2016 Billboard Music Awards were a lot to process—Britney’s abs, Bieb’s dance moves, a new Adele video. But if there’s one moment we need to break down before we can move on with our Monday, it’s Gwen Stefani’s makeup. Did you get a good look at it during her duet with Blake Shelton?

This is not the ivory-skinned, red-lipped, cat-eyed Gwen Stefani we know. “Paring it down while glamming it up,” said her makeup artist, Gregory Arlt, on Instagram. And the award for understatement of the night goes to… Let’s break down all the ways in which this was a major makeup change-up.

1. Bronzer. So much bronzer.

Stefani has always embraced ivory skin, despite being a California girl. That’s why last night’s bronzed, strobed glow—which on J.Lo would be all in an average day’s work—felt borderline shocking. Pops of highlighter on her brow bones and cheekbones plus darker bronzer contouring the hollows of her cheeks amped up her bone structure in a way we’ve never seen before. Uncharacteristic peachy blush played into her complexion transformation, too.

2. Lack of liquid liner.

The thing about making a cat eye your signature is that one day when you finally take it off, it’s almost like you’re walking around naked. Something just feels like it’s missing. We felt this way when Taylor Swift stepped out sans black liquid liner recently and feel it again when looking at Gwen. But thanks to smoky shadow, her eyes still had plenty of impact onstage.

3. That nude lip.

Glossy and flesh-toned, this color made her lips fuller and yet not the dramatic focal point they are when she wears her signature red (occasionally bold pink), shifting our focus to her cheekbones and brows (which, hello, power brows—we seriously never appreciated them before!).
