Liam Payne and Rita Ora’s New ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ Song Is Surprisingly Not Sexy

Rita Ora and Liam Payne each have their fair share of certifiable jams. Ora’s tune “Your Song,” for example, was one of the most buoyant pop efforts of 2017. And Payne managed to break out of his One Direction shell just fine with delectable ear candies like “Get Low” and “Bedroom Floor.” This, mixed with the fact that Ora and Payne are hot humans, made them the perfect candidates to record a song for the upcoming Fifty Shades Freed film. It’s a no-brainer, really: Two sexy people with ears for a good hook should be able to craft a Fifty Shades song that’s both catchy and titillating. Right?

Well, apparently not, because Payne and Ora just teased their new song for the film (titled “For You”) on Instagram, and it’s surprisingly not sexy. Like, not at all. Yes, Ora and Payne sound great on the track and, yes, it’s totally fun—but it doesn’t have a smidgen of sex appeal. It’s all sugar and no sauce.

“We did this #ForYou! Had so much fun in the studio with @ritaora,” Payne captioned his post on Instagram. Take a listen for yourself, below:

This sounds like it belongs on a Carly Rae Jepsen or Meghan Trainor record more than a Fifty Shades soundtrack—and that’s not a bad thing. We’re in dire need of effortlessly frothy pop treats like this. It just feels a little…off-brand for Christian Grey and his Red Room.

We can’t help but compare “For You” to Taylor Swift and Zayn’s song for Fifty Shades Darker last year, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever.” That song just oozed sex, and it was a banger. Unfortunately, lightning didn’t strike twice.

That’s not stopping us from bobbing our heads to “For You,” though. The full song drops Friday, January 5, and Fifty Shades Freed hits theaters everywhere on February 9.
