Mariah Carey Had the Realest Response to Her New Year’s Eve Performance Mishap
We’ve all been in a situation where things didn’t go exactly as we hoped, but when a major technical malfunction threw off Mariah Carey’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve performance last night, causing her to leave the stage in front of 1 million people, she came back on Instagram today with the best response to the unexpected situation.
ICYMI, about 20 minutes before the ball dropped Saturday night in New York City’s Times Square, the Queen of Holiday Spirit, Mariah Carey, took the stage to help the huge crowd there say goodbye to 2016. She started off her “New Years Rockin’ Eve” performance with a rendition of “Auld Lang Syne,” which she nailed. But when it came time for her hit song, “Emotions,” something went very wrong.
As the song started, she told the audience, “We can’t hear.” It turns out that they hadn’t actually done a sound check for the song before the show, as she explained, so Mariah couldn’t hear the music to sing along. For any normal human being this would mean running off the stage and hiding under the covers until 2018; for Mariah, this meant staying composed, being upfront with the issue, and reminding us that the song went to No. 1. (Yeah it did, Mariah!)
“We’re missing some of these vocals, but it is what it is,” she said. “Let the audience sing.” As the New York Times reported, Mariah tried to suggest fixes for the issue from the stage, and she and her dancers tried to perform some of the routine that went along with the song. “I’m trying to be a good sport here,” she said. The song finally over, she simply said, “That was amazing.”
But when the technical issues persisted with “We Belong Together,” Mariah knew when to call it a night and stopped singing, even as the vocal tracks kept running. She ended her performance by saying “It just don’t get any better” before walking off the stage. (Hey, we can’t exactly blame her for being frustrated.)
Her most badass moment of the night wasn’t on stage, though: After her performance she took to Instagram and Twitter with a post that contained the perfect response to the situation—and proved she had some great perspective on the whole situation.

Yep, sometimes shit definitely happens—and we love that she didn’t feel the need to apologize or say anything about “disappointing her fans.” It was out of her control, and she handled it as well as anyone could have. But being able to crack a little joke about it at the end of the day? That’s the mark of a true pro.
