Replacing Jennifer Love Hewitt: Our Casting Picks for the I Know What You Did Last Summer Remake

I feel old when: I try to run more than two miles. I meet a 21-year-old who was born in 1993. It takes me three days to recover from a hangover.

Or when I hear that I Know What You Did Last Summer came out 17 years ago.

But thankfully, I will get to relive those days of my youth when I spent every Friday with a pack of my friends (at least 10, never less) at the local movie theater, because the slasher movie that originally starred Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. is now being remade by Sony Pictures, according to Deadline. Oculus director Mike Flanagan is cowriting the new script, and original producer Neil Moritz is producing the latest version. While I’m excited to see the movie updated, I’m also a bit wary—because who can fill the scream-inducing shoes of JLH? The first cast was a collection of the teen idols of the ’90s (it also featured Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe), so whoever gets slated for the remake has a lot to live up to. I’ve done some serious thinking, though, and here are the actors I can see stepping in to the latest version of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Troian Bellisario as Julie James

Bellisario’s gotten plenty of practice acting terrified upon receiving cryptic notes and covering up murders as Spencer Hastings on Pretty Little Liars. She also has the same JLH wholesome-teen appeal—despite being 28 in real life—that we loved in the first version.

Theo James as Ray Bronson

This one might be selfish on my part; I’m just dying to see more of James since I got my first taste of him as Four in Divergent. But just as he protects Tris in the YA thriller, James can help save Bellisario from the murderous, hook-bearing fisherman.

Chloe Grace Moretz as Helen Shivers

I really debated this one and couldn’t get Ashley Tisdale out of my head for a while, but ultimately decided to go with Moretz. Why? She has horror film experience (The Amityville Horror, the forthcoming Dark Places), is actually a teenager (she was born the year the first I Know What You Did Last Summer premiered), and she sports three names and the same innocent adorable-ness that Gellar brought to the original role. The only downside? [SPOILER] She has to die in the end.

Chris Zylka as Barry William Cox

The Leftovers’ star is practically a dead ringer for young Phillippe (minus the curls) and has worked on ’90s revivals in the past (appearing on the remake of 90210 and the TV series version of 10 Things I Hate About You).

The one pickle in my casting plans is if the remake is made on the same micro-budget model as Oculus—which might mean going with more under-the-radar actors. But until then, I’m going to be rallying for my foursome.

Let’s hear your picks! Who would you want to see in the new version of I Know What You Did Last Summer?
