The Black Eyed Peas Just Gave 2003’s “Where Is the Love?” a Powerful Update

A lot has changed since 2003: Beyoncé was still in Destiny’s Child. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were still Hollywood’s golden couple. And perhaps most jarring of all, we were still three years away from discovering Taylor Swift.

But it’s what hasn’t changed that led the Black Eyed Peas to reboot one of their most popular songs. In June 2003, the Black Eyed Peas released hit song “Where Is the Love?” in response to the 9/11 terror attacks. Its lyrics addressed issues including terrorism, racism, gang crime, pollution, war, intolerance, and violence against LGBT people.

Now, weeks before the 15th anniversary of 9/11, the Black Eyed Peas have just released an updated version of their famous song. It’s definitely gotten a makeover in terms of the music itself (although they collaborated once again with the no-longer-fresh-off-NSYNC Justin Timberlake again). The revamp also brings in new vocals from Mary J Blige, Nicole Scherzinger, Audra Day, Jessie J, The Game, Usher, and A$AP Rocky.

The new video uses graphic, poignant, black-and-white photography to focus attention on the recent terror attacks in Europe, the crisis in Syria, the shootings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, and the killing of five police officers in Dallas.

“I remember when the attack in Paris happened, people would say ‘We need ‘Where Is the Love?’ again,'” Will.i.am says in the preview video. “And then Belgium happened and then Turkey and then Orlando and then Philando and Alton before him, and then Dallas. Everyone was calling on us like, ‘We need that song again.'”

It also features a laundry list of other celebrities, including Vanessa Hudgens, Kendall Jenner, DJ Khaled, Quincy Jones, Jaden Smith, and Shailene Woodley. All proceeds from the new song will go to the i.am.angel foundation.

And for old time’s sake, here is the original from 2003:
