She’s the entrepreneur behind the billion-dollar business the Honest Company. An actress. A star! But Jessica Alba sees herself differently. “I’m a pear,” she says. “Thicker in the butt, hips, and thighs, and smaller in the tummy.” Not that she’s complaining: “Butts are awesome.” So for her capsule jean collection—designed with the eco-conscious New York City denim brand DL1961—she’s putting her money where her mouth is…by designing denim that enhances rather than minimizes. Naturally, we had questions!

So what’s the secret to figure-flattering jeans?

“You want some stretch so they hold everything together. The other secret is for them to be a little tighter in your thighs so they lift your butt, then nipped at the waist to accentuate the curves. I like them to hit at the belly button so you get the nice roundness of the booty. And definitely not small pockets. They make your backside look weird.”

We all have different bodies. Can one pair of jeans flatter all?

“A lot of designers fit for one specific body type, and I’m like, ‘I love that brand, but the pieces are for a completely different build than mine.’ So I did the fittings on four women. What’s special about these jeans is they make a flatter booty look more round, and if you have a voluptuous booty, they hug it in the right way.”

What’s the biggest Glamour Don’t with jeans?

“I don’t want my butt crack to show. And I never want to see someone else’s. Even if you wear a crop top with my styles, you’re not going to see thong. I’m a grown-ass woman. I did that foolishness when I was a teenager because I didn’t know any better. Cover your business.”

How do you style jeans for work, weekend, evening?

“Right now I’m wearing a blazer and a white T-shirt with blue denim and pumps. That’s work. On the weekends I’ll do sneakers and a button-up. Then for night a silk blouse or a flowy knit with pumps or booties.”

This is your first foray into fashion design. Why jeans?

“I’m a California girl, and I grew up wearing denim. It’s the base of how everyone dresses on the West Coast. But I wear denim even when I’m in Paris. It’s cool.”

Do you see the Honest Company expanding into fashion down the road?

“Nope. But I will make lots of laundry detergent for people to wash clothes with.”

Speaking of, what’s the best way to clean jeans?

“I’m the wash-cold inside-out and hang-dry type.”

How many jeans do you own?

“More than 20 pairs. I have a lot of repeat offenders. If I like something, I’ll buy three of the same style. It’s excessive, but when my friends come over and have nothing to wear, I have an extra pair of jeans—and I don’t mind being twins.”

Who are your denim icons?

“Brooke Shields, Ali MacGraw, nineties supermodels like Claudia and Naomi. And Kelly Bundy [from Married With Children]; her denim game was on point. By the way, bodysuits with denim are back, in case anyone was wondering.”

Who’s your girl crush?

J.Lo. Hell, yeah! I just saw her perform. I could just bow down to that woman, let me tell you. She’s rad on so many levels.

All-time favorite pair?

“High-waisted cropped skinny. They’re cute and flattering, and you can take them day to night.”

There’s something inherently sexy about jeans, right?

“My husband for sure gives a little pat on the tushy every time he sees me in my jeans. He can’t help himself!”

Let’s talk technique. Is there a right way to put jeans on?

“Once they’re buttoned and zipped, I always do a squat. It puts everything in a comfortable place. [Laughs.] I have no shame in my game.”
