‘Hip Dips’ Are the Latest Instagram Trend in Body Empowerment, and We’re Here for It

“Hip dips,” also referred to as “violin hips,” is the nickname that some women have given to the indentations they have in the area where their hips meet their thighs—and it’s also the latest body-positive movement to sweep Instagram. According to the hundreds of women who’ve taken to social media to post photos and videos about this, the dips have made some of them feel self-conscious, but their posts show them coming around to celebrate the dips for what they are: a totally normal and completely healthy part of having a body. So far more than 1,200 people have celebrated their body diversity using the #hipdips hashtag.

After all, even the most confident among us can struggle to love our bodies from time to time. (Hey, we’re only human.) The good news is that we’ve come a long way in terms of celebrating body diversity and recognizing that beauty comes in all different sizes and shapes. Like violin hips’ body-positive cousin, mermaid thighs, and the other body-positive movements that have trended recently, no two “versions” of the hip dip are going to look alike. And if you don’t have them, that’s totally normal, too.

Violin hips or nah, mermaid thighs or thigh gaps—no two bodies are the same. What the women in this growing movement are really promoting is how important it is to embrace whatever it is that makes you look like you.
