Amy Schumer Just Shut Down the Sexist Red Carpet Question “What Are You Wearing” Once and For All

In 2014, during the throes of awards show season, a beautiful thing popped up: the #askhermore movement, which seeks to eliminate the decades-old sexist “who are you wearing?” questions geared towards women rather than asking them about their actual accomplishments. Celebrities like Reese Witherspoon championed the campaign, introducing it to a wider audience at this year’s Academy Awards. But it would seem that not everyone in Hollywood has caught onto it, namely red carpet resident host Giuliana Rancic.

Tonight, during the red carpet portion of the Emmys, Rancic started out the night by asking Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Ellie Kemper how she “balances it all” since she’s a new mom—and feminist Twitter didn’t take it quietly. “Giuliana is a literal dumpster fire of stupidity asking these celeb moms how they find balance. What happened to #AskHerMore? #ERedCarpet,” tweeted one user.

The moment recalled last year’s Emmys, when Rancic had a similarly awkward exchange with Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi, asking her, “So tell me, you are in your forties now, and you have never looked better. A lot of women watch you, a lot of women want to know what are some of your tips for looking great and just glowing all the time?” Both ladies, Kemper and Lakshmi, answered Rancic’s questions earnestly like true professionals.

While Rancic did branch out this year, asking America Ferrera about the triathlon she ran earlier that day and asking some of the men she spoke with about who they’re wearing, she repeated an old mistake by asking Amy Schumer about her choice of apparel. Naturally, she didn’t get a canned answer: “I’m wearing Vivienne Westwood and an OB Tampon,” said Schumer.
