So, There’s Now an American Boy Doll

American Girl might need to change the name to American Person because the company has decided to expand its collection, genderwise, with the addition of its first boy character: Logan Everett. Logan, a Nashville resident who looks like a Riverdale extra, plays drums in a band with his friend Tenney Grant, a Nashville singer-songwriter. Tenney will also become a doll; both will be available on Thursday, February 16. But don’t get any ideas: “They are not boyfriend and girlfriend,” a company representative explained in a Facebook Live video announcing the new dolls. “Tenney is 10, and, really, she’s focused on her music career.”

Watch, below:

This is something that consumers have been asking for “for a very, very, very long time,” Julie Parks, director of public relations at American Girl, told The Huffington Post.

American Girl has been expanding its collection to include more diversity in recent years, a subject we discussed in the “American Girl, Today” episode of Glamour‘s Work Wives podcast. There are now dolls of every color, and specialty companies will augment and adjust dolls to have disabilities and other features so that they can more closely resemble the wide range of girls who play with them. “We’ve heard you want more diversity represented, more interests represented, more stories represented, and we couldn’t be more thrilled this year to be delivering on that request in such a big way,” a company rep explained on the company’s Facebook Live video.

Logan is, perhaps, a start doll. We only just met, but he strikes me as aggressively normal. Still! We’re sure his personality will emerge as we get to know him and as he introduces us to his friends. While we don’t have specifics yet on Logan’s full accessories line, we know that he will have a backstory, and it’s probably safe to assume that there will at least be a Meet Logan book.

Logan. Wolverine claws not included.

Now, I have some questions: Should we record a follow-up about this on the podcast? Are we going to get any historical boys? What about historical boys who fit into the girls’ narratives? Like that rascally neighbor who ruined Samantha’s birthday? Didn’t a bunch of the gals have brothers? Will kids playing with Logan ever know the struggle of getting your doll’s hair hopelessly tangled? And why does Logan look like he should be in an Aeropostale ad?
